was 'real' Meccano when I was a kid .. the metal stuff ... still have a big box full in the attic here ... my old man used to make me motor units from old Smiths 12v heater motors ... solder a pair of angles to the body to mount them, then run them to file the shafts down to Meccano's 1/8" spindle size ... were pretty damned good power units (y) and beat the hell out of Meccano's own clockwork motors

I had a pneumatic tracked excavator one of those as a kid - mega! It had a little sprung pump (similar size to the rams, disguised as the exhaust) to supply the pressure on mine.
I had that exact same model, still got it actually, but it’s in a bit of a state at the moment, I should really find the instructions and build it back to how it should be. In the excitement of my youth, I tried to make the undercarriage bigger and give it more reach 🤦‍♂️.....nothing’s changed 🤪😂

I really like the look of that remote controlled Technic excavator, but I was under the impression they hand been discontinued?

So I plied my mother with fish & chips and extracted a load of surplus shelving. Phew. Crisis averted... For now!

Ah yes, I have that also. It is IR by default though, and very slow - dogged by a clutch gearbox that needs fresh batteries to "throw" you over to the drive and rotate functions. I've converted the upper with sBrick and keep meaning to buy another for the lower - but before I did that I slapped two XL motors on the tracks and hung a battery box underneath. Goes like the stink. With all the functions on sBrick I will be able to continuously 360 slew and drive. Seperate battery packs are the secret. There's a video on my YouTube channel;

how do the rams work on those ? hyd. or actuators?

Linear screw actuators. There are now three lengths, the one you see on 8043, a smaller size that's appeared in a few sets and a new longer one on the 42100 Liebherr R9800.

The whole roof of the cabin presses down activating a pair of pumps
It's a bit difficult to use but fun none the less
One of the more recent sets a Mercedes grab lorry has a battery powered onboard compressor
All though you don't actually get a compressor component you get a piston and the receiver and build it into a compressor using common components
The engineering is absolutely incredible
I have a mobile triple extension crane the back hoe loader and a claas zerion tractor with3 mechanicaly selectable steering modes
I have that one. I also have a duck with a pump, but you can add a motorisation pack to that and that gives it a pump. The claas was fascinating to build, though the crane on the back gets in the way when I show it to people and makes the lever very fiddly.

so don't need to make a new one for it .. Rory .. unless I wanted to leave one on permanently .... it'll also take any of my Kins rotators and my 70 mm pick ups as well ......... plan ahead ;):)

twelve 44 x 30 mm spacer bosses to machine for it and that half's done ...... almost ;)....
hopefully me M10 x 80 SHCS,s'll be here tomorrow .... quarantine them in a tin of thinners ... that'll **** up any covid bugs :giggle:🤗 ... and I can handle 'em for fitting (y)

I have increased it to 14 per post. Some people still operate on reduced bandwidth so while it may be your gain it could be others frustration while they wait for it to load... Just a little thought.

We have over 20000 images hosted :)

🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂 yeh right :p ....
if Icould get the photobucket links to work, I could use that instead Ross ... just never seem to load  still use it for CEF and Maskinisten

well I'll be damned ...... loaded straight off .......... @Mogman 'll remember that one :LOL: no brakes ... had to ram a skip to stop it :rolleyes:

Pretty good. It uses pneumatics to lift the boom (so suffers from droop if you leave it up) and I upgraded that to dual cylinders to give it a bit more grunt! The boom winds out on a long rack & worm gear arrangement and the same motor powers that and the winch, selectable off a lever.

I have 42082 still to build;

was talking about the 80/100 tonner ... next to the piston in pic two .... or is that 42082 in the pic above ??

I like cake
You don’t need to use photo bucket :)

see how that goes I’m sure it will be fine 👍

it should just need a img tag? if you click the photo button and then the chain?

Yeah that's 42082 above. AKA "Big Red" as it is massive.

The one I have is 8421 Mobile Crane, though 42009 is a newer version (2013 Vs 2005). Last year they released 42108 also but I think that is smaller and not as complex.

I reckon you should invest Druid, keep ya entertained building a small fleet of stuff up when it's wet!

Just had a 2.5hr session and built 42097 Spider Crane. Nice little build but not sure if I will keep it long term. Lots of handy parts, tracks, gears, liftarms etc :)

Nice touches were the cones (though nowhere to store them on the body) and the cylinder with lifting eye.

Not a lot done today .... lashing down most of the day :( ... and 'kin cool with it, especially in the wind ... been a bit of a bitsa day

spent some time cleaning some drill shanks, until me arms had had enough of running abrasive tape over them :censored: ... I use up old grinding belts, which when well worn are still pretty abrasive, nigh on indestructible and can be cut to whatever you like, from a 1/4" wide upwards and any length to two metres :giggle: .. bloody great for cleaning pins ......... and drill shanks :rolleyes:

but then me arms gave up :(... only several dozen more to go :cry: ......... so moved on to summat, a little less strenuous and that I've been meaning to do for a very loooooooong time .......

sort and organise all me taps ... they just got slung in when they arrived  ....... they are now sorted ... BSW, BSF, UNC, UNF, BSP, gas & metric, with a few cycle thread/very fine, plus all the small .. 3/8" downwards to B.A., still to be identified .... the eyes had had enough, by the time I got to them 🤓

also cleaned/sorted several tap/die holders in need of some TLC and generally re-organised their storage locations too ... as you can probably tell, 'twere 'kin wet today  and has been beating on the box roof, most of the day

phone rang about half four ... carrier down at me far gate, to say he'd dropped a parcel in the flower basket, t'other side of the gate for me, which was good of him (y)... me number's on the sign on the gate asking folks to keep out  ..... was a little soggy by the time I'd gotten back with it, the post and a.n.other small package, which're all sat, 'til tomorrow, in quarantine ...... these however got the thinners treatment

..... didn't do me surgical gloves a lot of good  ... but'd hopefully be un-necessary after a thinners bath ;):sneaky: .... really can not see any bugs surviving 5 minutes in a bath of celly thinners :giggle::giggle::giggle:

hopefully I can get to make some use of them tomorrow(y) ...... 'sposed to be dry for a week again 😁🤗

is that fully motorised Alex or manual operation ? ..... neat little thing

I've never seen one of these models in the placcy .... what holds them all together .. pins/screws??

No, all what Lego terms HOG (Hand Of God). No space to motorise, hence why it will likely wind up being parted out.

They are held together by a variety of pins and push on nuts with X shaped shafts. Amazon have a good deal on 42082 btw, down to £170 from £230. I reckon you'd enjoy it.
