Do I start to do my own servicing

It’s what I do!
X 2 on all of this, Mick, especially 3). Basically, anything with an epicyclic reduction, like finals in shovels, tracked machine finals, regular oil changes and good oils are a must. You’ll get an idea of the state of things from the colour, debris and smell of the oils. When phosphor bronze bushes start to wear there’s a real stink.Checking final levels between servicing isn’t a bad insurance policy. They can still wear, but hopefully you can catch them before total failure, which never happens in a convenient place.

Another thing is using hired in attachments is cross contamination from oil in the attachment. I hired in a breaker to go on a 10 tonner and within an hour the hydraulic oil in the sight glass had turned nearly black. Quick oil change probably saved a few problems there.

on our fleet after we’ve done a service we do a quick “pdI” including a full grease up. Soon shows whether the ops have been doing what they tick on the sheets.
When hiring in attachments it would be good idea to take off the return line and run it into an empty can for a bit!

Mechanical seals tend to give up when the rings get brittle or broken!😊

Not fully investigated yet. The oil is running down the inside of the sprocket

It needs a top up every month at the moment (not empty but few pumps from the oil filler upper) but obviously it won't improve so it's moving up the need to get done list.
Mick’ll be best on this specific machine but I’d be surprised if it can be done without a special tool. For comparison the finaldrive on a Cat CTL is held to the backplate by a circular nut with holes in the end, but like a bigger version of some older truck wheel bearings, and this takes a torque of about 3400 Nm. I built a jig to hold the drive and we spent something like £2500 on the proper tooling, as it’s a job we do frequently.

Hoping Mick chips in now whether it’s cheaper to fix or get a reman unit from one of the specialists.

won't need to be for long with a P line providing flow :ROFLMAO:

whenever I've purged 'new buys', to get the mineral oil out - with 150psi of air .. what's in there comes out pretty 'kin quick and the can needs to be well secured to the line :giggle::giggle:

Duo cones tend to be a bit more unfortunately.

As much as we would like to do all of our own work, there are some jobs where it’s more cost effective to farm it out, but a lot depends on what you have available in terms of space, tooling and ingenuity, plus what you’re prepared to spend setting up.

Picking up on Doob’s posts, he says about his oil cans and cleanliness. He’s on the money with separate jugs for separate oils and keeping the jugs covered. The old “any oil is better than no oil” attitude is false economy with new engines, hydraulics and power trains.

Serviced Hilux yesterday, full kit with genuine oil £106 delivered, took no more than hour and half to do!
Toyota wanted £400 for exact same, I’d of been without the truck all day, buggering around picking it up etc!
I was happy to pay main dealer prices when they gave you the extended warranty along side, but now it’s out of age thou shall pay no more!!

Interestingly we've got a 1 year old golf at work on a maintenance contract..1st service it's gone to a local independent who's deffo not a VW dealer...(they stipulate and organise the booking)
What does that tell you...

Obviously it's on lease through a 3rd party and not vw direct.

Been thinking about servicing my 2011 Pathfinder by myself, never serviced a car etc before. Can I use 15w/40 or 10w/40 oil?

On my truck it'll of had 4 oil changes before the first one is due.
Yeah the old listers used to do their own oil changes as they ran, if they were in a dumper and doing runs across a field, there was a definite black track left in the field, and a can of engine oil tied to the rops.
