You need to chain machines to the front on a hookloader..... If you don't and things go awry you'll drastically regret it.

IMHO I'd have a set of fixed length chains on the front, hook em, track forward to tighten them and then have a opposing set with binders at the arse end of the machine and a strap over the boom.

Fyi and before someone says every chain needs a binder.... It doesn't. Reality is provided chainage isn't loose it's serving it's purpose.

You could in the UK have two chains going from the sideboards of the lorry over the top of the tracks and that would legally oblige, but you and I know they would be as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Except you can't go over tracks because that's another one they get upset about.

I agree that they are pathetic rules. Mostly policed by people with no actual experience. Which seems to be a recurring problem in this country. Some how we have ended up with a society whereby experience counts for nothing.

I got pulled with a 13t machine chained with two chains over the undercarriage and a 10t strap over the boom.
It took them an hour to determine if it was secure. The rear chain was up against the sprockets and hooked onto the side fairing but behind a cross member so the machine couldn't slide forwards. But they didn't think the chain was at a shallow enough angle to stop forward movement. I pointed out that any shallower and there wouldn't be much stopping it going sideways. They where very confused

The guidance says chains should be as flat as possible.. We’ve had machines moved by a lot of serious players, some chain over the tracks, but some won’t as for them it’s a disciplinary offence to chain over the tracks, so they’ve obviously been burned at some point. Quite a few companies insist their drivers photograph the machine after they’ve chained it.

I’d be interested to hear what Mogman has to say on all of this.

While we are on should we discuss doors chained back?

Not really a thing over here due to the design they tend to use leading to two bits of metal sticking 18in out the side of the lorry if the doors left open.
No reason why you shouldn't leave them open providing they are secure, within your national width limit and don't obscure rearward vision from the mirrors.
When a machine is loaded the back door isn't acting as part of the load security system.

Might just have to pin the one back .... our limit is 2.55m for the lorry and I don't suppose doors constitute part of the load 🙂 its 2.63 with the 2 pinned back and about spot on with the 1 only.
We have no limit on height.

talking of load binders...what a nob:

This vehicle was stopped in the A1M
@northumbriapol
area. Both brake lights inoperative and it’s load was insecure. If one of those brakes discs or car batteries fell from the vehicle it could cause serious injuries. Driver summonsed #prevention #showusyourload #opmainline

Moving sideways a bit (or backwards)
Some of you might find it interesting to see how the trailers are over here, think they are different to uk offerings.
My old trailer on ball hitch and straight drawbar isn't suitable for new lorry so I've moved it on ....
Hitch.jpg
called round acouple of dealers on way home, seems like there is choice of 3 in town.
Wagon is on a ring and high up some needs this adjustable drawbar which also should shorten it all up.
Any observations folks ?

All about 2.7-2.8t capacity - and 1.7m wide internally - awaiting prices

1. Is used ( out 4 times he said so should be discounted)

Well the authorities were on it today outside our site from around 8 until 3pm marked and unmarked pulling lorries vans and cars. I wonder if any of the "legitimate" driveway specialists were stopped 🤔 as they have a couple of sites around the area
