From rough memory the disco one would be non electronic, just the mechanical shift cable and the kickdown cable. From crank boss back it's all different, a light plate carrying the starter ring and a fairly chunky boss to centre the torque converter and bolt the flex plate to. In your case you should be able to use the flywheel from the original engine to use the manual transmission.
As an aside the zf torque converter bell housing is really useful to have about as the autobox couples with a circular machined surface so it's possible to use a clock gauge to centre the gearbox to the engine when doing conversions 😉😁

I reckon they've done a pretty good job of building a modern wide beam, it's proportions look very similar to the ones fabricated by the well established builders 🙂

the torque converter drive plate / starter ring gear carrier plate is a piece of circa 2mm plate, which is stiffened up by the TC being bolted to it ..
all the auto boxes I've ever swapped to manuals (SD1s- same stable) have had a bigger dia. phosphor bronze spigot bearing in the crank nose and need to be swapped out for a manual spigot bearing, which is smaller bore to take the LT77's first motion shaft nose/spigot.
can either hydraulic out the spigot bearing, or I made a tool for pulling them and tap in the new one (I've probably got a few V8 ones sat here, but unsure on the size of one to fit a diesel motor - never did anything with those hateful oil burner things :giggle:)
bolt on a manual fly wheel (there is one bolt hole very slightly off pitch-so get them all in, before pinching up) and attach the LT77 to the back of the motor -- assuming the blocks are all the same and don't need any form of adaptor plate to marry them up?
as regards MB & CN's comments on throttle, etc. .. no idea .. never played with diesels, but yeh some SD,s had a kick down cable to the box too - easily removed at the throttle body/linkage (the GM180 box was done on manifold vacuum)

The Australian army had the right idea putting the big Isuzu into their Land Rovers , they would have found it even better if they had put the ZF hp22 behind it 😁
Think I've got this right - in Oz, the 2-1/4 stopped with the S111. After that, there was a hybrid (basically a coil sprung S111) only available in the 8.
The army put in a big contract, but wouldn't accept the engines offered, so the 4BD1 chosen and that was the diesel for both the mil and civi models.
The 4x4's got the na engine and the 6x6 got the turbo.

I passed on the suggestions above and the reply came back:
1) All Aus 300Tdi's are straight mechanical pumps.
2)I assume he is talking ZF HP22 auto, he is talking LT77 manual we have a R380.
I thought LT77s were used with 200TDi's and earlier, in Aus all 300Tdi's used the R380 manual, Defender, Disco 1 and ZF HP22 auto Disco 1 only.
3)Yes the auto has a kick down cable from the throttle to the the auto box.

Same crap. Like schools max every 40 years replace them if not sooner, invest in what should be the future although the crap they pedal these days I'm not so sure

what a beautiful piece of work - one has to appreciate the elegance and complexity of design, at a time when this was done on drafting tables and with slide rules, for an engineering team to produce all the components by hand. " A 12-cylinder Nordberg diesel radial engine. This engine displaced 29,556 cu in (484.3 L) and produced around 2,000 hp (1,500 kW). Note the fuel injector in the center of the cylinder head.

The Nordberg radial offered several advantages over the stationary inline engines that were the current standard. With its cylinders horizontal, the Nordberg radial’s output shaft was in a vertical position. Although the engine was built primarily to generate power for the electrolytic reduction of aluminum, its arrangement was perfect for pumping applications. In addition, the configuration of the radial made it more compact and much lighter than a comparative inline engine. The Nordberg radial took up about half the space of an equally powerful inline engine and could be installed on a much lighter foundation.

The Nordberg radial was first introduced in 1947. The first engines were spark-ignition natural gas burning units that quickly established themselves as reliable and economical. These engines had two spark plugs located in the cylinder head. A single cam on the crankshaft actuated a gas valve for each cylinder. This gas valve allowed the natural gas into the incoming scavenging air for the cylinder.


Nordberg continued to develop the radial as its use spread to central power stations and various pumping applications, primarily for flood control and at sewage treatment plants. Nordberg soon developed a diesel version of the engine and a version that could run on a mixture of diesel and natural gas, which Nordberg dubbed Duafuel. The Duafuel engine could run on 100% diesel or as little as 5% diesel and 95% natural gas. This flexibility allowed the engine to operate with the most economical fuel mixture possible. In the diesel and Duafuel engines, the single cam now actuated a fuel pump for each cylinder, and the diesel fuel injector was in the center of the cylinder head. "

Seen one like that in the road from Aberdeen to Inverness, ending in a huge drop off. I went past with snow and ice on the road and wondered how hard it had to freeze before it was like the jump ramp on a carrier. I reality a full artic with no brakes will probably plough through any frost in this country, but even then.
