Alot of how you do it does literally depend on the owner and their tie to the horse. You can also strap it and leave the strap on. Bur don't go lifting it too high or too quickly.
At £65 plus VAT per hour I'll even play them a lament on the mandolin whilst they mourn.

You won't need to worry about its legs sticking out, if that's what you mean.🤪
Never knew you had a set of tree shears too!

Absolutely do not put the strap round the neck when pulling it out. Put it behind the front legs. Otherwise it is not unheard of for the head and body to part company
That's also good advice.

What machine are you using?

buried my mums horse of 27 years with 3cx fair size hole and had a good 1.5 meter of cover as surprising what will dig them up. all our other ones that died went to the knacker man, £50.... winch rd hoof dragged up into trailer and off much easier than burying them.

dug up a few while doing menages etc as well luckily only Skeltons and discoloration of the ground.

We were doing a tank last year when the owner of the property asked. Could we give him a lift out of the stable with a horse that he had shot as he wanted to bury it? We got in there. The horse was on its side with legs sticking out, we gave one attempt and laughed. That horse was literally a dead weight. We told him he would have to take out some of the say, stable sheets and drag it out with his tractor

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
never done a horse , several sheep for next door, not long after they came here with JakieB, on separate occasions ... good 6ft deep and plenty of room - sheep in bucket and roll out ... gently .. all fat pets ... none of 'em have ever re-surfaced :giggle:

I’ve always tied the hooves together and lifted them that way, but you will struggle with a small digger if it’s any more than a pony.
Dig the hole much bigger than you think you need, they don’t always fold up very well with an audience….

how deep do you put them? google suggests a clear metre over the top? its got to be dragged out of the stable as well not sure what I'm letting myself in for!
i have done a few a lot really depends on how the horses owner wants the job done, the first one i ever did i asked the owner how they wanted it done and where they wanted it buried i told them it was the first time i had done it and together we made a plan i was nervous about not making myself look a right twat so was as carefull as i could be. i dug a hole about eight ft by ten ft about eight ft deep used lifting strops to carry horse to the hole across a field. make sure you have enough length on the strops to be able to lower horse in to the hole i use a jcb 3cx to do it my boss at the time was a mate to owners husband the husband and myself done it all his wife didnt want to see it being done thankfully it was tricky getting horse flat in bottom of the hole it was rigid more or less. not something i liked doing at all it would have been easier ramping down one side but obviously much more to dig out took roughly the morning to do it all.

There was a long running thread on the farm forum of “how to remove a dead horse” 🤣

Not inspiring confidence now! hoping they will just leave me to get on with it.
As said before ask them exactly what they want before you start. Some people will want dobbin to be buried with its favourite reigns or rug on but hopefully as you say they just let you get on with it.
