Brake drums were a mess but the bearings were all OK. I love my needle gun

Gave the drums a basic rub down with wire brush cup and abrasive paper. Quick sniff of etch primer and some black tish. If it was mine it would be red tish. Can't have rusty subs poking out of the wheels

Later today it will be Bowden cables and adjustments before getting it back on the new tyres.....

won't beat rocking beam suspension set up for axle load sharing ... used to use them a lot on leaf sprung twins ... IIRC I have a brand new 3.5t set sat here still

Nope - the plan is the make his garden bigger AND extra car parking spaces for his 4 x children when they start driving in a few years time....

.......extra parking going for two or three cars in an L shape more or less where the U27-4 is sat.
Extra dig out for Type 1 then in with the sharp sand and block paving

Read your post and went straight down to my yard a minute ago and checked.
Was hoping to get this refurb job wrapped up by the end of this week
Fortunately I have a spare spring and shackles in stock.
Looks like I'll be using my needle gun again for the retainer. May as well put some tish (a la @V8Druid) on the axle "while I'm in there"

which is exactly what rocking beam takes care of ...
is also exceptionally good on uneven/rough ground as all four wheels maintain the same loading.
TBH, aside from the additional costs, I don't understand why 'Ifor', et al, don't use it ... makes for such a better ride (and easier coupling height maintenance)

Druid, do you want to sell that kit? My old trailer is on rubber and the axels are getting pretty rusty and starting to split so it’s about dead. The rest of it is in good nick so I’m reluctant to scrap it.

An economic leaf spring conversation might be appealing.

have a couple of axles plus a suitable Knott here and been collecting the materials together to build myself a flatbed, (not got one), when/if we ever get some decent weather this year.
They were supplied by Peak originally ...
I put a PDF spec. sheet up earlier for their range ....

used to be quite decent prices, but not bought any in a loooong time.
need to spec. the axle type (round/square/size?), for the U bolt sets and the spring lengths, dependent on the wheel size.
Main thing when fitting them is to get the central turrets bang on equal, or it'll crab - front and rear hangers aren't quite as critical, but the better you get them, the better it'll ride.

brass and grease was always my choice

I suspect that's why both are offered.
If you maintain it (ie. grease the bearings), then brass lasts better.
If it gets no maitinance, nylon may last better.

.......so big vote of thanks to @craig - road spring now replaced. I know I have only done one, but that's all I had in stock, and this trailer needs to be back on the road

And when I turned my attention to the hitch and the knackered rubber boot, found that the sliding part has seized up

Yep after cleaning can get WD40 and then grease into it. But still seized

So going forward will strip it down and show it my hydraulic press later today......

Chock the back of the weels, drop it on a towbar and give it a jerk.
Not as convincing as a press, but it might save you the hassle.

The damper is spot on
So new boot and new locknuts all torqued up

got several of those torches from Aims Tools a few years ago ... all but one going strong (doesn't hold its charge for long) ... damned good little torches - one in each vehicle, a few scattered about the house for when the leccy goes off and a couple in me boxes -- all hold charge really well (bar the one ) - ones in the vehicles might not see a charge for months

But like most youngsters you show them once and they have got it
Funny thing happened yesterday when working in the yard on the trailer.
Handed him a 17mm nut and said, "Can you you get me an open ended to fit that nut"
He said, "What size spanner do you need?"
I laughed and said, "The same size as that nut"
"Oh yeah!" We have a lot of laughs every day.
