what wears most is the heel in the socket that comes down behind the ball when the handle's dropped and attachedThe older type bradley hitches where the safety clip went around the rear of the handle, had a measurement for the gap between the lug and the slot in the safety clip that indicated wear (somewhere).

at one time when everything was going metric, 2" couplings were common on older trailers .... combine wear with a 50mm ball, 0.8mm smaller than 2" and there was quite a few went AWOL!!
and try getting a 50mm coupling on a 2" ball
's also why that ball should be well greased, to catch yer troos on, if you forget to put the nicely greased cap back on .......
