The best towing vehicles we’ve had were 3.5 tonne 3l Iveco daily twin wheel tippers. Very very torquey and geared perfectly, with enough weight to not be bossed around by anything hooked on the back.
My coil sprung Navara was the best all round pickup I’ve owned - kicks the arse out of our current Hilux imo.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
Sure there was a bloke on arbtalk a few years ago who fancied himself as a bit of a towing guru. Made a case for the "applied load" principle but nevertheless not sure VOSA would see it that way sadly!
" applied load " would only apply to a gooseneck, or 5th wheel types of set up - all 50mm balls / couplings / tow bars have a specified max. nose weight.

I seem to remember we had this argument with him multiple times and established how worrying it was that the trailer trainer didn't understand the trailer rules or principles

A weighted tipper is 3.5t a pickup is nearly 1t less. In general the heavier the vehicle the better towing experience. All pickups no matter how powerful tend to let the tail wag the dog. Plus most pickups are designed as hand bag motors now, the gearing of a tipper is way better.
Agree with all of that, but my handbag carrier Navava does have other uses 😎

And as far as load carrying - yes not as much as a truck but just be sensible. When I was looking for pickups, the Sangyoing Musso was the only one that could legally carry 1 tonne on the bed AND tow a 3.5 tonne trailer. It's all about the GTW :geek:
Last week when I unloaded a small pallet of pallet of postcrete with my FLT I was surprised how much the arse came up. :ROFLMAO:

I'm not saying that pickups can't be used for work. Just that we have long since passed the point in there evolution cycle where work functionality is the foremost design criteria.
Very soon someone will come out trying to reinvent the wheel by producing a utilitarian vehicle. Only to turn it into another Chelsea tractor in short order. Or maybe ineos have already got that badge sewed up.

Long Wheelbase part loaded RWD van with a towing diff will piss all over any 4WD/SUV for ON road towing duties in a forward direction.

Having towed with a 7.5 ton and long wheel base transit/iveco etc I suggest you try a land cruiser then re assess your comment.

Even part loaded can be a tendency in certain circumstances and road conditions to try jack knife / push back end out under hard breaking/ turning etc

The land cruiser are like towing with a tractor

We used to run a 130hd but was under powered and not a patch on the jap pickups for towing, needed another hundred or more hp.

Dont get much more utilitarian than an old defender lol

Just like my old one! Agree not much power but found it a solid ploder for towing and used to often tow the 2.8tonner and have the pickup loaded too- I kinda miss mine.
I remember when the beast from the east hit. Was dark coming back up the long drag back on to the moors, blizzard conditions- roads filling up cars abandoned everywhere, I was giving a lift to a couple who had managed to position their Freelander in a ditch. My hicap was the only vehicle still going on those roads- driving along with head out the window as wipers couldnt clear it any more- I felt so proud of her that day!

Twin wheels make a massive difference to stability I think.
