What are using paying for the filters ?

Just ordered through SMTGB and feel been shafted

VOE17266182 has superseded to VOE15714572@ £14.52 each and VOE17266226 @ £35.37 each.
Sorry can't remember what i payed for the genuine Volvo filters as i got a stock of maybe 10 so was some time ago. I certainly wouldn't pay £35 for the filter in the sediment trap as its just a gauze element and easy to clean.
Have used various non genuine filters as its a very common filter, they are generally about £6/7 and seem ok, no different to genuine, try Inline filters.co.uk.
Interesting that part No.has changed, i wonder if they have gone to a different material that's more tolerant of water ?

I installed a 35 micron marine water separator pre-filter on my tractor 18 months ago and it’s been perfect since - running on pump white pretty much from day one. I’ve never seen any water in the bowl ever.
During the cold spell we’ve just had it broke down twice (when running hard) - I swapped the filter both times and it was then perfect again. No water in the bowl either time - filter looked crappy first time but next time nothing to write home about. I’m certain it was exacerbated by the cold (it’d run fine until you made it work hard).

We are pretty lucky up here as very little bio added to fuel as we get all fuel by boat its pretty pure as they can't take hydroscopic fuel on the boats for obvious reasons, but I add fuel set into fuel regularly

I've tried Stanadyne additive that claims to do much the same, and is quite a bit more expensive, think i'll try it again with a clean filter and keep a eye on the sediment trap.
The Volvo has a plastic tank so condensation should be minimal, i fill up 20 lt cans at the garage since the demise of red so it doesn't stand around long, my 8 ton takeuchi has a steel tank and doesn't get such regular use but suffers less with restricted filters ? filters are presumably much finer as its a hi spec common rail engine ? Must be more to filter technology than i understand i think ?

With modern fuel the problem isn’t just condensation in the tank, being hygroscopic the bio content draws moisture directly from the air. It also doesn’t seem to let it go into moisture traps either, in my experience.

Bought some filters few weeks back from the excellant Largo Plant.dont know which filter is which but fuel filters include 2 x steel canister filters for my kubota tractors.the Volvo filters may be recognisable by part numbers.all well known brands aswell and been using the above for filters for all my tractors and plant for years.if Anyone is after filters give Largo a ring.found em a million times better than Riko too.

When the red diesel up get changed to en590 i think second bulk fill i had i looked in the tank when it was half way down and there were tiny little specks all over the fuel which i think was start of bug issues. I took decision there and then to treat on delivery every time as prevention is best end to it.

sounds like a plan that (y) .... I ran everything up for an hour Crimbo eve as had not been started in a while .... all fine, after that severe cold .... 'Drema was it's usual first flick ... but absolutely zero dash lights and cab was seriously wet with condensation ... gonna have the dash out and on top of a radiator once the invaders have burgered off and I feel more like it ... don't think the canbus dash liked the cold and damp :(:(

I'd be suprised if something like 10% biodiesel was pulling much water in. its more likely condensation or seals have shrank and hardened from derv/red and now leak air in. Biodiesel really doesnt take in much water at such low levels but it is very good at cleaning out old sediments from older fuel tanks which is infact much more likely to be a problem than the water issue.

They actually use biodiesel to clean seabirds that have been smothered in crude oil spills because its so good at removing nasty sludgy hydrocarbons and any residue is edible. i have seen inside old fuel tanks and would want the grey sludges anywhere near my fuel systems

I’d be quite interested to see the source for this. We ran tests with 100% bio and it was very nasty stuff. After a spillage it lifted the epoxy floor coating in the test cell and ate into the concrete. Doubt it would do a bird any good.

looks like their CytoSol biosolvent is a bi-product/alternative product of bio diesel production

That’s biosolvent, not bio fuel.
its mostly biodiesel they just add emulsifiers and nutrients to a methyl ester base. the methyl ester base is the same as biodiesel.

solvent if its being used to clean. fuel is its being used to burn but its essentially the same thing with different additives for different purposes

That’s like saying lager is bitter as they’re mostly water. It shares a chemical base, but it isn’t bio diesel. If I’m wrong, let me know how you get on running the solvent through one of your engines.
