Thanks so much Ruben, a very comprehensive inspection . It was nice to speak in person despite the dodgy connection lol.
Aside from the mechanical condition, am I right in concluding that the Yanmar is not legally towable in the uk on an ordinary car / trailer setup? If so I would suspect this would diminish its attraction and therefore price? It’s of no concern to me as long as my transporter is happy with the weight.
So it’s over to all you guys now for your thoughts and advice before we proceed…….. Thanks again Ruben

OK, so I've just been to look over the Yanmar.

It started instantly as a Yanmar TV engine should. It's had a new starter solenoid and ket switch bodged in though.
It's a big chunky welded kingpost.
What do you guys reckon?

closer to home I'd go take a look .......... and kick him hard in the balls/wallet ... way too much as it is -- transport job for anyone that needed to move it about

I think it sounds too much for it's condition and general antiquity. Another grand or two and youd be getting into circa 2010-12 era machines which will be quite alot more fresher/refined I think and towable too if you find the right model. Surprised they B27 is over 3 ton as thought they were a genuine 2.8 tonner. How many hrs is she on @doobin? I think £7500 for the yanmar would probably be more like it?

Thanks Storsey, great comments and advice. From memory I think around 3000 hrs. Being led by Doobin, 7k seems more like it, so you are in the same ballpark. Wether the vendor will go that low remains to be seen ……

A mate of mine just let this go for £5800. Was a lot looser in the pins though.

It's seems a decent enough machine for what you want if it- just not at the prices he asking. £6k is a good starting point he may ignore you but don't ask don't get and he may meet you at £7k!

Don't go in low and expect to meet up on price. Just go in with what you want to pay for it and a bit of reason to why. That way you've put your cards on the table. If they accept then it's great, if they don't then you move on.

you can always come up I'd be starting hard at £5700 and as Doob said, he doesn't seem to have had a lot of interest ... plus we don't really have any firm idea of what he IS actually asking - Ebay's figures are just that - 'Ebay's figure ' ??

a reasonable approach too Alex ... but you then risk having to come up beyond your figure ..... it'd be an unusual seller who doesn't expect a haggle
Only time I don't 'go there' is if the price is right to start with - don't insult the seller's intelligence - learnt as a very young lad watching my old man being told to " **** off - it's not for sale now - I asked a fair price" and he was right - old man said as much -- -- never forgotten -- know when not to take the p*ss

There's a whole psychology around selling things isn't there! Personally when I sell things I tend to ask what I want/think it's realistically worth from the outset and not really interested in haggling etc. But then the other day a mate was saying to me when he buys used he expects there to be 10% wiggle for haggle factor. If a price I think is fair I wouldn't haggle unless there's a reason to- unadvertised faults etc that are going to cost.

I've bought and sold many a vehicle, at one point was my main income, I still do today but as a secondary.

Someone who's come with a fair approach always ended up taking the vehicle home...those that came with the low bids and big haggle didn't...one because I'm stubborn and 2 because they portrayed the agro now, theyd be agro after the sale too.

I've bought many things...including the green machine purchase...just buy saying this is 'where I'm at and I'm prepared to give you this'

Biggest gripe now is all these tossers that bid you without even seeing it and will say offer 3k for somthing you've got on at 4.5k...I'd also say most of them that throw daft bids like that you could say yes to and they'd still not turn up. The joys of selling over the Internet.

I still get good results from a forsale sign in the window.
