Leccy vehicles do have there place.... If sensible inner city logistics where established they would work exceedingly well.....

Trouble is it requires a level of communism not seen before in the UK that even British Road Services would be sickened by. With containerised goods being shipped between large distribution centers, reduced down to a 18t rigid and on to large hubs located in the urban lands before being split and the last leg/legs being done with vans. Such a change could facilitate Road Trains which IMHO the UK motorway network could happily handle and should handle.

Cars could also easily be yanked off urbanites and replaced with subsidised taxi's..... all could be leccy.
But what we really need to do is loose our love of JIT logistics if we want to save the planet.

and develop a system with enough capacity to provide sufficient leccy to keep it all moving without crashing .. and doing it cheaply ... otherwise - no chance

To be fair, it exists.....
But it's not viable if your going to plonk a fkn great lump in every home.
Easy enough to route decent 3 phase or even 11kv direct connections to a few hubs..... We do it for Railways and Quarries.
but a car in every home? No chance.

got 11KVa lines here Rory ....pole is on my property as is the 240v 1ph tranny... wanted over £25k to give me 3ph here ten years ago  I'm sure the Tesla owner next door would love a 3ph charger - he's off the same tranny

....... has 11Kv lines on their property either -- pole and tranny were changed here several years ago and could just as easily have put up a 3ph tranny then

Grah, read my post and ask where I've said electric vehicles are suitable for every home and business. Your making yourself look like a fool which we know your not.

Cities suffer from air pollution, it's undeniable. Electric vehicles in cities much like leccy forklifts and tugs in warehouse settings have there place and should be used..... Infact at one point around 100 years ago we could easily of seen electric cars stay as leading methods of transit.

Problem is we see cars as a status symbol and the type of vain twat that wants to live in a city would rather lease a range rover than a sensible run around..... Failing that a oversized, overpriced Tesla will do..... You could cut urban congestion overnight by banning cars from all citys and altering the roads to suit golf buggys and Kai trucks (think Bedford rascal, Isuzu etc) and if logistics where sorted this wouldn't be a issue..... With larger wider vehicles accessing when there isn't a option via posted routes.

All areas of the UK where you would need a supply have access to a 3phase supply with SP 11kv being a exception rather than a norm generally reserved for spur lines.

I've always said the grid cannot take the requirements of a leccy car at every home... But that's generally due to the cabling from the tranny to your house on the 240v/415v side being undersized by modern standards.... And the fact a majority of towns use sections of phases to power areas Sharing cables and load.

With regards your tranny. I'd ring WPD and ask the question if they would swap your wayleave rights for a upgraded tranny 😉

the point I was making Rory was that our archaic 1ph/240v installation network and the insistence of the providers to not improve upon it as / when the opportunity arises is not going to help their cause, one iota.
you last line just added is an interesting idea  ....... but very unlikely to be acceptable, as they ain't long swapped the tranny :(

as for the 'every home should have one' .... if it's not on the agenda WTF are they pushing everyone to swap their current vehicle for an 'ever ready' powered roller skate ??

I can distinctly remember Scottish and Southern being fined by the regulator when they ploughed their profits into making their network more resilient.... apparently in his view cheaper energy in the way of lower bills was more important
🤔 . You can't realistically fine a company millions and then expect the management to do anything sensible 🙂

Don't complain - suggest what's better
Why are people so obsessed whith criticising what other people spend their money on? Surely it is a good thing people spend their money rather than hoarding it? Spending creates jobs . Most peoples jobs rely on discretionary spending rather than necessites.
Also if the power grid does fall over you won't be able to get petrol or diesel either as you won't be able to pay for it and the pumps won't work to get it from the tank to your vehicle.

There's been articles on the news, and other outlets reporting that National Grid say with the way power generation is changing to more wind, Nuclear etc, these are predominantly offshore or coastal now, whereas the old coal stations were mostly inland. This, combined with the change in electricity demand (which is going up due to population increasing AND the rise of the electric car) NG say they need to expand the grid and build 5 times more powerlines in the next 7 years than they have done in the last 30 years!!!

That's some amount of pylons! The NIMBY's wont be happy but its going to keep the construction industry busy - or at least some of us. I don't like electric cars personally for several reasons but even I admit that either way, change is coming - its time to look for the opportunities this creates. Plenty of car chargers need installing at offices, homes, schools and the like. That's the sort of work that keeps us lot busy on here. Man with digger will dig!

It's not as much as you think.

The grid has hardly grown since the 80's tbh. It sounds shocking but the reality is we have had more HV lines decommissioned and erected as poles rather than pylons recently. Mostly as the 33kv and 132kv distribution network was generally overspecified in the 60's onwards to account for growth which in many places never came.

No issues with someone choosing to go and buy leccy ...their choice bit like vegan etc
But to shove it down our throats and legislate etc that's my beef... especially when it doesn't add up imo

All in all though with them mainly clogging the inside two lanes at 70mph max it keeps the outside lane clear for those of us "making progress" 😎 every cloud silver lining and all that.

Actually feel sorry for them in this foul dark cold weather you see them creeping along to preserve range...setting off over shap in a winters night must be bold move 😂😂

It's not so much the electric cars. It's the ridiculousness of buying an electric vehicle to save the planet and then selecting a great big heavy Tesla with enormous lcd screen. When realistically most when most people would manage with a twizzy.
Don't try and hide the flashy motor behind an excuse of being eco friendly. If you want the flashy motor own it. No different to the lane excuses for needing an SUV. Just admit you want it.

I agree completely, I don't have any real problems with electric cars as such, But why do they have to be so ridiculously over size and over complicated with those stupid touch screens etc.
What would really help would be making and selling the majority of them in the size, weight and spec of 90s hatchbacks (with the addition of a Bluetooth radio/handsfree). If nothing else it would save a hell of a lot of fuel/emmisions/wasted electric range from inept parkers trying to find somewhere to leave them!

I'll be sticking to diesel for as long as possible though thats for sure!

Unfortunately manufacturers can't design and make new cars based off what I'm looking for in a used car. The screens and technology(and high price lol) are what new car buyers seems to want.
