There’s merit in removing the load from an alternator, but I can’t quite see how that buttplug does it?

I have a device on a car, which sadly hasn’t seen the road in a while, that disconnects the alternator when you bury the throttle, thus releasing the power taken to drive the alternator under load. The alternator is then reconnected once the throttle is released. But this is a chunky switch, like an isolator, not buttplug shaped at all...

Similar to the Ford smart charge and think VW have their own version.

ford system using a smart clutch on the alternator so disengages when load is applied so pretty much charges at idle and can charge closer to 16v, clutch is controlled electronically to see set readings

In theory it should work, but in reality it's a garbage system that permanently leaves your battery in a state of discharge (12.2v) resulting in needing a battery sooner or having to disable the system. Fuel savings would be absolutely minimal as even when the alternator isn't engaged your still spinning the belt anyway.

That vw story floats about every now and again https://www.google.com/amp/s/jalopn...like-scams-are-still-out-there-1847437249/amp

well aftert nealry pulling the trigger on the ioniq5, decided to go for the new VW multivan PHEV. Can still put it though the books and no range worries while the charger network is sorted.
