yeh ... always give the valves a smack to seat the collets on a head build ... wouldn't want to drop a valve for the sake of a smack with the copper mallet
I'd be inclined to attempt summat along those lines with the rocker gear in place TBH ... gives a gauge as to what to give attention to ... as said a very loose tappet'd be my first point of interest ... she was never a tappety engine ... in fact was always very smooth and quiet (for a 4.236):giggle:
thanks for the suggestions .... all advice gratefully received and taken on board (y)
Aye, just double check the push rods seat back in the cam followers correctly if you choose that route... I'm of the opinion that tappets aren't usually a problem on those engines. If it didn't sound like a bag of spanners when you parked it up, I highly doubt any clearances have changed.

unless the valves aren't seating properly/remaining slightly open with crap in the seat, which'd increase the clearance ...... and it wouldn't take much in the way of crap to hold a valve open ... hazelnut shells are 'kin hard :( ...... can't see what else'd cause the symptoms TBH ... all push rods're in place

well this looked better for Pam's endeavours with the weeds .......and an hour with the roller ...

didn't get as much as we'd have like done today ...... shopping delivery, accompanied by a 'trunk monkey' (search that one on you tube:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:)
took up a considerable chunk of 'day' ..

she's growing fast ... and I may have trouble ....
View attachment 16434

she climbed in here unaided today, so I'd better make damned sure the keys are never left in it when Clara's about ...... or Jake (when he's sorted) or the Thwaites ... none of them present any obstacles to access any more !!😆 and it'll only be a matter of time, 'fore she's at 'em
anyway ... we did get a bit done, as said ..... and I had a go at yon disco ........ turned over sweet as, but couldn't hear the in tank fuel pump prime the lines when the ignition is turned on ..... :( ... they're known for the earth terminal rotting off the sender/pump unit in the top of the tank, but fortunately there's an access cover in the boot floor (unlike the P38 ) ....... assuming you can get at the back door, that is ... I couldn't .. hard against a gate ... so

stuck a bar on it and hauled it forward .... eventually got at the cover, under the securely bolted down rear carpet and 20mm of insonorisation ... and nope.. 'tweren't running ..... battery in't boot and run some jumpers to the pump ... ran sweet as ...... so, somewhere between the front end and the pump we have a lack of comms. ..... that're gonna take some finding ... this is a hybrid and so will the wiring loom be  ... know me way around the flap valve system with me eyes shut ... and where everything is located ...... this is going to be a long search.for the fuel pump relay and the impact cut off ...... Land rover's wiring was never the best .... especially when it comes to colour coding and continuity

might just chuck a battery in the back, to run the pump, to start and move it for now ... the power steering boxes on these do not take kindly to operating 'dead stick' , on a bar ......... would much prefer to juggle it about under its own steam ... job for tomorrow
If memory serves, all the wiring for the rear tends to travel over the top of the door pillars. Which leak.

Druid,
I’ve come across several diesels that don’t want to start due to ‘low compression’ after standing for a while.

Having checked everything like you did, the easy solution on each occasion has been blow a hot air paint stripper down the inlet manifold whilst turning the engine over.

it’s hard to believe that just a little bit of extra heat really does make such a difference.

I think someone suggested that on the easy start thread. May have even been druid himself

yeh me too Rob ..... absolute sods to start .... but heat is a great tool (y) .........
the pre-heater in Jake is fully functional and produces a diesel fed flame in the inlet manifold, as it should, which is even better than just hot air ....
still nada. :(
It's the chuff at the bare inlet port that has me convinced of a valve issue :cry:
he's out the way and tucked away for now, which was the main reason for the start up ... he can wait 'til I've the time to dedicate to some intensive efforts .... Mobilising a Disco is today's priority

yeh you can't beat a flame down the inlet to give 'em that 'extra' incentive to go for you ..... I do not like ether, full stop !! (even though a lot of Cummins were fitted with a canister from new for cold starting )

nah ... fuel pump and sender is fed underneath Alex ... just can't recall WTF the inertia cut out is ... might be in the n/s A pillar .... SD1 is dead centre in the boot, in the wheel well and real easy to locate .....
a pretty shitty set up TBH ... ball bearing held by a magnet, making a circuit .. a good bump and the ball drops ... had a plunger to lift it back into position ... go over a serious bump/ramp in the road and they've been known to stop dead

Brake cleaner is a softer option than easy start.
Propane blow torch, is my 1st call on starting aids(y)

Them bits you found are very unlikely to have done any damage to the valves, if you’ve plenty of fuel at the injection pump and injectors give it a sniff of easy start go easy tho it’s over use that does the damage
Lynks is my preferred can of choice...........................

agreed, that or the oxy, but as said, in this case I can see the cold start flame burning well in the inlet with the bonnet and intake hose off (y)
Carb cleaner is also a very good ether substitute :giggle:

so the "job for tomorrow" got looked at ... after we'd had a MAJOR weed and general scrub burning session and I'd juggled a few other things about ... returned one of the scaff towers to its original home (as Clara'd lost interest in clambering about on it) and relocated a recently acquired other one to 'access (manual variety) corner' ... after i'd dragged out a load of brambles I'd lopped a few weeks ago and left to dry .

WP_20200705_19_04_30_Pro.jpg

any way ... several burning binfulls later ... I got to look at yon Disco .... knocked up a lead to run the pump from the fag lighter socket beside the driver's seat .. ran it up and cranked it ... started first flick, then stopped  ... stuck some more fuel in it, although showing 1/4 tank on the dash ... just in case and tried again .. and again ... Nada!!
sounded dead, so stuck a wire straight to the coil ... Nada !!! :( Plug out to check for spark ... fine but dry, so came to the conclusion the injectors weren't firing .. I know me way round SDs and Classic RRs with me eyes shut ... as in where everything is 'parked' and what's where/does what .... this is very different ... and as said a bit of a hybrid ... ☹ .... somewhere in there is a main relay, a pump relay, an ECU main power relay and the ECU for the EFi ..... where is another story ???:unsure: ... it was now time to eat, so wrapped it up for the day

Hamster juice time this morning so didn't get at it 'til damned near lunchtime ... re-arranged me pile of 40mm clean first off, to make me some space to relocate the Disco, having moved a couple of trailers yesterday to create a slot, once I'd squared the heap up ... and slung the old girl for a move ...

saved stressing the PAS box ... as said .. they don't like 'dead stick' and meant I could get it done on me own ... rather than trying to explain just where and how I wanted it to 'the boss' , on the end of a bar .... much easier all round ... ;):giggle: ... it's now a lot closer to all me tools, rather than walking back and forth for gear ........ and out the way to finish off with the roller, which was next on the agenda, 'til me phone rang and 'twere Vicki, down at the gate, with the eggs she'd forgotten to leave yesterday  .... and a certain little bundle of trubble  ... so that put paid to progress for a while .

Eventually managed a.n.other rolling session and got the rest of that area squared up to Pam's satisfaction .....
WP_20200706_18_02_41_Pro.jpg

Still think the donkey box is gonna have to relocate too ...

Pam has Josh, KM and the two boys coming shortly, in their camper, apparently, from Plymouth, now that the 5 mile thing's been lifted in Wales...
Before they depart for a summer vacation trek (their original plans, earlier in the year, got stymied with the virus) .... but're now intent on some time away, when KM finishes school for the summer, shortly.

They're not going to be able to stay in the house, so ... we'd been looking at these pop up gazebos for a while, for the lawn, for shelter for any visitors, if it's not dry, but failed to find anything suitable (or that Pam liked)!! ....... but have found an alternative (which should do the job) and provide some dryness if it's wet, when they're here (and for any future requirements- hopefully) ..... so watch this (or that) space for 'developments'!!

As for the Disco ..... again -- job for tomorrow, by the time Clara and Vicki'd departed and I'd given it some with the roller. :giggle:

Well Helen was finally able to hop over the bridge yesterday to see her Mum which was good. If they're bringing their camper, surely they can just stay in that?

Or one of the boxes :D

absolutely Alex, but if it's wet during the day they'll need some shelter .... as said, they won't be coming in the house (so'll stay tidy for a change ;) :giggle:) .. Plymouth was a bit of a hot spot at one point ... aaand they're both 'gadding about' working  ... so there will be plenty of 'social distancing' going down ...... I've persevered this long .... and's likely to continue for the foreseeable ATM :(

Glad H was able to get to visit her ma at long last. ....... Would've been an even longer 16 weeks here, without our 'secret shopper' and her 'trunk monkey' appearing weekly :giggle::giggle:
