ruts sorted and parked up for the day ..... was like late Autumn here yesterday ... back in me winter clothes ... two shirts, sweat shirt and fleece .. June be bolloxed !! The burning bin full of leaves and dead pallets was very welcome warmth, by the end of the afternoon

went down the drive to unlock me gate this morning and found our best plum tree had succumbed to gravity's functionality .....

hardly surprising looking at the quantity of plums on the entire tree .. better look into getting some props under some other limbs, 'fore they all go the same way ....... last year was good ... this looks remarkable

Anyway ... job for tomorrow, see if I can salvage this limb too ... Vicki and the little un arrived later in the day with some odds and sods ... Clara's nursery re-opened this morning and she'd had a great time with her friends ... first time in a long time ... she was full of it

Simon arrived not long after with a box of rollers from the same machine as we'd been fannying with before ... had a load of new mill back up rolls to swap spindles in .....

and some new outers installed ........ self centreing 'barrel' roller races are a bitch to press ... like a can of worms squirming about, 'til you get 'em 'captive'

@Delbouy 's press has been doing some sterling service lately ..... two spindles had some decidedly ropey bearings and I wouldn't allow him to re-use 'em so only managed to get one set of three sorted ... rest're a job for again when he's acquired some new races.

kept the dead sleeves here ... can never have enough 'round bits' when you have a press .... bound to come in handy at some time in the future.

been a mixed few days recently, with the weather and what I've been up to ..... more juggling when dry ...

IBCs and pallets of blocks came from here ...

followed by the second Dane, under that tarp ... and shifted 'Humper-dumper' across 10 feet to make some more space for the Thwaites

and JakieB .... the Thwaites made it up there under its own steam , no problem ....
Jake however, had other ideas
Had been running a bit rough (unusually),when he got parked where he came from a while ago ... Not sure whether yesterday's issue was related or not..but he DID NOT wanna start ... on investigation, the initial (I assumed) cause was a bloody rodent'd had decided the inlet manifold would be an ideal spot to set up home

obviously ... I'd no idea the lil' bar steward'd moved in when I tried cranking Jake, so I'd no idea whether or how much he'd ingested ??
so ... one minging manifold later ....

emptied out ...

and all inlet ports blown out with 150psi and hoovered for good measure too, with the air on full bore in unison .. manifold duly improved in the handling stakes ...

and seriously 'greased' up to aid the re-union of what'd passed for gaskets when it decamped from the head ...

it got re-installed ......

I'd not had a great deal out of the ports ... next to sod all in fact ... so gave it another go .... but would he buggery start ... and chuffing slightly at the inlet, so reckon there's a valve not closing completely, 'praps even two, as I'd expect it to start on three ...... so resigned to having to have the head off unless anyone has any brighter ideas ??
anyway ..... he was gonna have to move, one way or t'other as we (Pam) wants to use the space where he and the dumper were sat, for a while .. more on that one again ...

Pam went out for a walk earlier in the week with her mate she walks with and who should they 'bump' in to, but said mason ..... unusually for Pam she gave him some 'grief' and told him if he doesn't want the job just ****ing say so ...... his response was, he'd be here a week Monday ... guaranteed .. she'll give him some sh1t, if he reneges on that -- again !! ....... so i got to find some sand and cement next week, at least enough to get him started .. then find a lot more, if he does actually turn up ....... otherwise I can see me using it

Perky 4236 NA ... usually starts like a good un ... been through the fuel system and new filter fitted ... injectors cracked and fuel spurting ... closed whilst cranking, but he just does not want to have it .. as said, I detect light chuffing at the inlet and that's usually a valve (or two) leaking compression to the inlet manifold

hell no ....... V8 ... one of 200-ish made ... 3.5, but hot wire EFi - not flap valve... test bed for the system they then fitted to the upgraded (I use the term very loosely) 3.9 hand grenade with the pin out over bored and grossly over egged ...... can't for the life of me understand why they didn't just stroke it instead ... the Buick motor it was originally based on could be upped to 4 point summat on the stroke with off the shelf bits

Ah, those were a much rarer order! I had a 96/N 300 TDI before the TD5, and had it tweaked considerably. Bigger intercooler, more boost, fuel pump tweaked etc. Was even considering propane at one point...

Them bits you found are very unlikely to have done any damage to the valves, if you’ve plenty of fuel at the injection pump and injectors give it a sniff of easy start go easy tho it’s over use that does the damage

was my thoughts too ... 's why I went again after cleaning the manifold and ports out .. it's the possibility of a bit stuck in the valve seats, holding 'em open that's the bother ... hazelnut shells're bloody hard

much as I hate it got a sniff of easy start to suss my thoughts on the inlet chuff ... nada . didn't even try .
there's a full injection pump and four full lines .... changed the filter, cleaned the water trap and pumped it all through then cracked the lines on crank and spitting nicely at the injector lines ...... short of whipping the head off, a boroscope in the inlet ports, with the manifold back off for access, is my only other thoughts .... the chuff makes me think it's chucking compression into the inlet manifold through a partially open valve

Thing is I’ve seen them run in some right states with bad compression but you never know I suppose
Take rocket cover off and watch what’s happening as you turn it over? Might show you if a valve is not shutting

have had the rocker off Dave and there're two valves with what I'd call LOOSE tappets ... .... will have it off again and turn it over , TDC-ing each one and see what i've got ......
just a complete PITFA ... has always been so reliable on the key ...
wanted to get it moved, but now I have relocated it with the 'Drema, I can take me time and suss it at my leisure ... reckon a bit of shell is all it'd need to hold a valve off its seat.... could even try rotating 'em at TDC, if there's enough stem showing to get hold of ... might dislodge any bits or bed 'em back in

If you suspect a stuck valve I think I'd just remove the rocker assembly and any valve caps then using a dead blow hammer or similar and smack the top of the valves individually. Obviously the pistons want to be a little off TDC so as not to break owt. I do this before I refit the cylinder head on any rebuilds I do to make sure the collets have seated correctly and the valves 'pop' if they've a good seat.

well this looked better for Pam's endeavours with the weeds .......and an hour with the roller ...

didn't get as much as we'd have like done today ...... shopping delivery, accompanied by a 'trunk monkey' (search that one on you tube)

took up a considerable chunk of 'day' ..

she's growing fast ... and I may have trouble ....

she climbed in here unaided today, so I'd better make damned sure the keys are never left in it when Clara's about ...... or Jake (when he's sorted) or the Thwaites ... none of them present any obstacles to access any more !! and it'll only be a matter of time, 'fore she's at 'em
anyway ... we did get a bit done, as said ..... and I had a go at yon disco ........ turned over sweet as, but couldn't hear the in tank fuel pump prime the lines when the ignition is turned on ..... ... they're known for the earth terminal rotting off the sender/pump unit in the top of the tank, but fortunately there's an access cover in the boot floor (unlike the P38 ) ....... assuming you can get at the back door, that is ... I couldn't .. hard against a gate ... so

stuck a bar on it and hauled it forward .... eventually got at the cover, under the securely bolted down rear carpet and 20mm of insonorisation ... and nope.. 'tweren't running ..... battery in't boot and run some jumpers to the pump ... ran sweet as ...... so, somewhere between the front end and the pump we have a lack of comms. ..... that're gonna take some finding ... this is a hybrid and so will the wiring loom be ... know me way around the flap valve system with me eyes shut ... and where everything is located ...... this is going to be a long search.for the fuel pump relay and the impact cut off ...... Land rover's wiring was never the best .... especially when it comes to colour coding and continuity

might just chuck a battery in the back, to run the pump, to start and move it for now ... the power steering boxes on these do not take kindly to operating 'dead stick' , on a bar ......... would much prefer to juggle it about under its own steam ... job for tomorrow

yeh ... always give the valves a smack to seat the collets on a head build ... wouldn't want to drop a valve for the sake of a smack with the copper mallet
I'd be inclined to attempt summat along those lines with the rocker gear in place TBH ... gives a gauge as to what to give attention to ... as said a very loose tappet'd be my first point of interest ... she was never a tappety engine ... in fact was always very smooth and quiet (for a 4.236)
