new oil seal in the axle tube, set up the tapered collet and mounted up the hub carrier ... top joint gets dogged before the drive shaft goes back in ... weird joint .... it slides up/down in its housing, to allow height adjustment of the bottom ball, to align the drive shaft in the centre of the axle tube ... took a bit of sussing ,,, but got there

WP_20200110_15_51_16_Pro.jpg

it was now ready for a re-assembly with all its new bits, including track rods, but needed to get the rod off t'other end to set up the ball centre distance on the new rod.

been like this most of the week..... as it's pissed down here since I don't know when .. the 10th according to the date on that pic FFS  ...
actually had a couple of hours dry today so dragged my arse out to have a look at it .... and promptly got pissed on ... hour later I tried again ...
and got it ready for the 'really' hard bit
WP_20200117_14_26_24_Pro.jpg

in case anyone's wondering the chassis is sat on sleeper blocks further down the chassis rails .. the jacks simply control axle height/orientation

got the track rod off ... and the drag link, from the drop arm .... damper mount bolt took some unwinding, but was like new once undone - impressed with the bolt quality TBF ...

was about to come back up, after a late snack for 'lunch', to find two cats sat watching two pheasants having at it on the patch ..:giggle:
WP_20200117_15_10_17_Pro.jpg

they know better than to join in .... them pheasants got some fearsome spurs :cry: .... they won't even bother them on a 2:1 basis

anyway, these are ready to get used to set up their replacements with

WP_20200117_15_52_56_Pro.jpg

and IF it's dry tomorrow ... and I can develop the enthusiasm. I'll wrestle the ABS sensor out of the N/S hub carrier ... in bits probably .. 'kin solid tonight when i tried it, then see if I can separate the rest of the assembly .... will be slightly easier as I know how the damned thing comes apart this time .... but'll almost certainly require hacking to bits .... really can not see it coming apart, without a fight
some sun would be very nice tomorrow (y)

Those bloody ABS sensors are made of cheese. Had a few on my D2 and I reckon they're the same manufacturer!

Glad you're back with it on the new meds though :) I'm still hacking slightly with this cold but mostly shifted it now.

I'm working today too unusually - we're having the batteries replaced in our server room UPS's so had to be in at 7AM to start swapping stuff over to mains. Got that finished around 9:30 and the UPS guys were then able to have at it. Hopefully they will be finished around 4 or 5 and then we can swap the load back.

Luckily most everything is dual fed so it has meant we avoided a lot of pain. Just had to fail over the internet stuff (as that's all single PSU) to the backup, and then back to the primary after a few mins.

They're installing a maintenance bypass for us to use in the future. Why the F nobody installed that orignally I have no idea.

My boss let slip that the CTO has always wanted a generator...

returning to your favorite ABS subject @Cyberprog ... and other's edumacation ..

's what the hole is 'sposed to look like ... not full of twenty+ years of crap .. and sensor ...
WP_20200119_13_12_11_Pro.jpg

this then goes in first ...
WP_20200119_13_12_06_Pro.jpg

WP_20200119_13_12_22_Pro.jpg

copper gripper cage ...
WP_20200119_13_12_28_Pro.jpg

followed by
WP_20200119_13_13_15_Pro.jpg

a stainless steel bodied Hall Effect sensor
WP_20200119_13_13_22_Pro.jpg

all the way in .... an' out t'tother side to sit ultra close to the drive shaft rotor
WP_20200119_13_13_27_Pro.jpg

plenty of 'float' in that and they start life packed in silicon grease in their housings, with a rubber sleeve seal to keep the tish out .... from t'other end at least
this end doesn't fare so well
greasing these will be a service item in future ... regularly !!

was another white start to the day ...
WP_20200119_10_31_09_Pro.jpg

managed to part the swivel carrier off her yesterday ....
WP_20200118_14_17_05_Pro.jpg

.....after persuading the damned sensor out and then battling the drive shaft and hub bearing carrier out of the swivel carrier casting/forging ... ball tapers behaved as expected VFT ... and took some thrashing to pop ....
cutting the nylock sections off the nuts first helped a lot ...
....and had clean threads to run them off on(y)

carrier got a bloody good descaling and clean up this morning, before turning my attention to the split collet adjuster, which's had a LOT of WD applied to it the last few days ...... clamped to the bench and some gentle rust cracking tapping first ...... and out the damned thing came .. sweet as !!!
WP_20200119_12_50_22_Pro.jpg

good clean with the thread file and a lot of titivating, it was ready to return to its post

yesterday's 'antics' were fairly fraught ... after the carrier surrendered ...
WP_20200118_14_17_05_Pro.jpg

those joints were not coming out without a serious fight
top first, to get some space to get at the bottom one .....
WP_20200118_14_41_20_Pro.jpg

came out well ... bottom one was a bit more of a battle ... but got there ...

WP_20200118_15_15_15_Pro.jpg

sockets were again in remarkable condition considering the state of everything else around them

on a roll ....... bottom one in first ...... er ... well we tried .... but yon tool was struggling with applying sufficient pressure and 'groaning' ...

took it off having got the joint half way in and had a look at it
WP_20200118_15_40_59_Pro.jpg

don't know if you can see that clearly .. but ... the spindle is M28x3.5mm .... the above is bored to 26.3 mm which is the tapping size for M30 !! so spindle thread is only bearing on a bare 0.75 mil instead of the full 1.75 mm ... it didn't feel right as I was starting to give it some :rolleyes:o_O:mad:
words will be had with the suppliers ... an Acme would've been nice, but if it'd been machined right, it should still have performed

so .... plan B ..... deploy a MORE substantial (and properly made) clamp to the task
WP_20200118_16_02_32_Pro.jpg

it went in, with some grunt
top one went in with a lot less effort than i would've liked to have had to employ :(
WP_20200118_16_06_33_Pro.jpg

Hmm ... all measured out at spec. ??? and were pairs ... some googling revealed last night that it's not unheard of .... summat to do with LR's machining skills and their tolerances being some what hap hazard:mad:

were it a conventional joint i'd not have been over concerned, but this one floats ... up/down by a good 6mm to facilitate adjusting the lower fixed/conventional joint to align the drive shaft in the centre of the axle tube (as said, before) .... and probably allow for their crap tolerances again ... so it was gonna need some druidising today ... for my peace of mind
........ and it got it ...
WP_20200119_15_19_41_Pro.jpg

WP_20200119_15_19_46_Pro.jpg

chances of me having to do this again are slender ..... but it'll cut out fine, if i have to;) ... couple of decent stitches and i'm much happier about it ..(y)

all ready to go back together tomorrow ...... new oil seal installed in the axle tube, all cleaned, polished, lubed, de-scaled, new track rod and drag link measured and set to previous centres, everything prepped for a re-assembly of the old girl and get her back on her wheels ready for her MOT

tonight's sunset did not disappoint either ...... been a glorious day ......
WP_20200119_17_09_45_Pro.jpg

and as a plus point ... whilst I'd spent the most of the day on the bench sorting and prepping it all ... Pam had voluntarily washed, polished and hoovered the old girl
hasn't looked so good in ages ....... even if she is currently missing a few wheels and some vital components :LOL:

I too was in need of a good wash and polish, by the time i got locked up and inside ...... I've mentioned this stuff before and thought i'd take a pic tonight, whilst it was out ........ best hand cleaner I have EVER used ... takes yer dannys from black to pink in one easy hit ...

it really is the utter ballaux

WP_20200119_16_58_20_Pro.jpg

anything that shifts carbon black off yer hands after handling oiled steel all day is worthy of praise .... have used it for donkey's years .... after trying/using all sorts of other well known, reputable stuff ... I have yet to beat it and you need so little of it, a tub lasts for ever (y):cool:

Stainless steel sounds better than the plastic ones on the D2.
nah ...... you try extracting 2" of S/S x 20mm tube full of windings and magnets, welded into its hole .... to get the drive shaft out ... before you can access t'other end of it :mad:
I'd take the plastic one every day of the week please(y)

I am no computer Man, I can only speak from my experience using computer since the Commodore 64 came out, I've been using every Windows version that has been, and my favourite was Windows 7, my current laptop came with Windows 7 and I went from that to Windows 10 in July 2016. When they offered the update for free from Windows 7 to Windows 10

I use this program http://www.classicshell.net/ to make it look and work like Windows 7.
My experience is that Windows 10 can be set up to work like older versions and and thus work with most hardware.
There is also plenty of dongle programmes that can be used to make old hardware work. It may still sometimes be easier to buy new Hardware

When it comes to speed have I found Windows 10 to outperform all previous versions
As Long as the puter's hardware is up for it ⚙

My Dell 17 inch screen and full keyboard, laptop has i5 processor 8 giga RAM and SSD disk
If you hit the start button it will have started before you have managed to pour yourself a cup of coffee😜👍
