had some sad news last night .... old teacher and later colleague and friend passed away - only a couple of years older then me - rare and incurable cancer -very quick apparently.

not long since I last bumped into him in town and looked very well
my last year in school, I did 2 A levels, Biology and Design plus an extra Human Biology O level, so had a lot of time in the workshops.
George and I got on very well.
the dept. had one chap who was a JP/Magistrate and spent quite a bit of 'time out' in that role.
I was often 'asked' to cover his classes and became a bit of an 'honorary' teacher, which is how I came to go into the profession, when I left and went to Redland Teacher training college in Bristol.
Finished there and had a couple of interviews for posts locally both of which I turned down after seeing the state of the schools - was about to go back into engineering, which i'd done for a year between leaving school and going to Redland, to put some cash together, to be able to run my car, etc. - the grant as utter sh1t then.

got a knock on the door one evening and it was the old head of design, offering me the JP's job - he was 'out sick' for a year and I'd be on permanent supply

which meant double money (but no holiday pay - which was fine), with a 'preferential app.' for the job next year. Was virtually begging me to take it.
I'd been the only one in my year to go into teaching, a bit of a feather in the dept's cap, and really wanted me to take the job, which I did .. down side was as the JP was hardly ever in school, I ended up with his timetable of all the 'untameables' (DCT was always the 'dumping ground'

) - high light of my week was two first year groups on a Monday morning

.....
Developed an understanding with most of the little wasters - I would take no sh1t and would happily reciprocate for any I got ..... and it wasn't a bad year ...
H.O.D. and George were great, very welcoming and treated me as an equal -- got on fine with the others in the dept. too, but a lot of the other staff were a tad off-ish, with me returning 'on their side of the fence', even though i'd gotten on fine with most of them as a pupil.
after 4 years 'away' there weren't many kids who actually remembered me as a pupil and I got on fine with most of the kids, being that much younger than the majority of the staff .. turning up for work on my XS500 Yammy regularly also helped my 'cred' too

However, I digress ...

didn't bother to apply for my post after the year was up ...
std salary in 1980 was shite, compared to what i could earn elsewhere and took a job in a big-ish engineering outfit welding / fabbing and some occasional stand in work in their machine shop, operating their two cranes, as needed and the really interesting job of wandering round the country fitting Tiretrac chains on loading shovels in quarries ... that was a very interesting year
..... so didn't see a great deal of George for some time, but whenever we bumped into each other, he was always pleased to see me and have a good yap.
when i started working for myself he'd pop in occasionally for a catch up and a cuppa. He was a genuinely nice guy
sadly George had been spending a lot of his time with his daughter and grand daughter, dealing with his SIL's terminal illness, the last couple of years, who passed away end of last year ...
's his g/daughter's 11th birthday soon and the anniversary of his SIL's passing shortly too, so his wife is delaying George's funeral for a week or three ...
too much grief in too short a space ....
Life's a real bitch at times

RIP George
