The Sonoff stuff is a piece of pish. Get yourself a basic - 240v l+n in, same out. Chop out the lamp switch and wire in place.

Install app on phone. Hold down button when prompted and it will pair up. Bing you can now control from your phone!

Install Alexa, enable the skill and she will find it. Tell Alexa it's a light and now you can say "Alexa turn the lights on". It's great!

I am not a fan of the tech but we have had a smart thermostat for 2 years which is quite handy as we can control the heating and hot water when we are away through the app on the phone. My wife has smart plugs through the house for various different things like the pool pumps, lights and plug sockets. She is happy to play with them but they can throw Wobblies when the power is cut. The storms the other week was tripping the power and several devices would turn themselves in when the power came back!! I was looking into smart house technology at a recent building show I went too and was quite impressed what it can do if you throw the miner at it. But the money can really start running away with things like curtain closing, why do you need to tell a device to close the curtains!!!

That’s not the right pairing, we use these type of machine clamps, they are expensive but bloody good, normally either use this or carver clamps. Don’t know why he would have ended up with that in his shed. Will be handy for that new mill you’ve got

what sort of range do those things have Alex? are they blue tooth or wireless ... what sort of current can they handle? sounds like an interesting method of controlling outdoor floods, with a suitable relay, if required, to handle the draw

Range depends on your wifi signal - they are 802.11b/g/n compliant. The Basic's are 10A, but the Light Switches (T1's) are only 2A. The POWR2 is 15A.

There is nothing stopping you from driving multiple units though, either through eWeLink and a Scene, so the T1's action will trigger the Basic's in your loft, or through alexa by defining a "Room" and adding those devices to that room, and then having an Alexa Routine to handle that stuff.

I have an Alexa Routine called "good night" - when I say "Alexa, Good Night" she will turn off the living room lights, and via the Wifi IR Blaster, turn the TV off too!

A Sonoff Basic, I forgot to add, is £6 or so off AliExpress, dropping to £4 if you buy 10. The T1 light switches are about £15.

Thanks Angus ..... I'll have a look .... have always found that a 15 thou gap is absolutely useless on it and IIRC have it set at circa 25 thou ...... I'll give it a tad more ... the next time said flywheel has to come off...
only motor I've ever seen with an ali woodruff key ... have really got to dog it down or it'll split the key and I'm clean out of spares

Bit of a result this evening. Found the living room light switch has a neutral at it!

Wired in my 2-Channel Sonoff T1 and I can now get it to turn the Sonoff Basic on and off when it switches on and off also.

This cat5 and smart stuff frys my brain. Is it worth getting a newbuild wired with the stuff one point in every room next to tv point? Perhaps a couple in select locations,potential cctv and doorbell locations then just all wired back to one central cupboard? I though wifi was the future?!

Yes, in my opinion I'd get it pre-wired back to a central location. Money well spent IMHO, the CCTV I have is all Cat5, Power Over Ethernet too.
Also insist upon there being a neutral in every socket, will allow you some latitude with smart switches or dimmers.

Installed a 45mm deep backbox this afternoon, though I now have to trip the finger plate cos it wouldn't fit.

Wifi is great for some things, but when you're running 4MP CCTV over it, I'm seeing 40Mb/s over my normal LAN to the NVR which is well on it's way to causing issues with wifi. With Gigabit ethernet between the rooms I can still stream from my PC to the TV without issues.

took the head trees out to give 'em a fresh lick of shiny shite for half an hour and copper slipped all the pinch bolts ....

can not remember how long ago I filled that, from a big bucket of the stuff ..... but it's a looooooooooooong time ago ... still a quarter full

those two Kwaka lumps got a leg up after that ....

and wriggled 'em into spot where I wanted 'em , along with three bloody big Record vices, I keep tripping over on the floor.

Then it was off down the village to Vicki's to collect the cause of all this effort over the last few days .....
got there just in time to witness their little leccy mower go poof... so had to sort that 'fore I could do anything else ... wire busted as it went into the switch .... made her hubby Chris jump ...

hadn't seen Clara for over a week, so a bit of grand dad-ing first, spot of re-wiring and some trailer loading ... bit more grand dad-ing and away back home ... to unload this ....

and a car load of cushions to fit ....
took some persuading into their home for the next few weeks, whilst the new conservatory gets sorted ... Was not flavour of the month with Chris.....had taken him two days to get the floor tiles up ... I laid 'em - properly - maybe 15 years ago didn't put 'em down to come back up again

these took a bit of wrangling in, to find the optimum orientation .....

was bloody hot in there again today ..... 34.6C at lunch time in the 'toolbox' next door to it and could not touch the roof in there .... as I found out when I put my back against it, juggling the Kawi motors earlier. Cheese cloth shirts are not much of an insulator.
Sat having a coffee after all this lot, chilling in the shade .... and Pam says....."right treatment next then " ..... had forgotten it was Monday ....... "no peace for the ......" Druid.
