How many did you buy at £200

I’m a worse trader than mechanic, I sold the extra grab that I bought by accident at auction to @V8Druid for cost. Albeit I palmed off the dodgy one!!

Someone got a bargain though. Also 2no HGR50 rotating Häners went for around £850+ which seems good value.

little trip to Monkswood this morning to finally meet Kevin .. got a biz servicing FLTs on site and buys/sells a few too.... nice guy ..... came home with ............this.. didn't trust the floor in Ollie's old Ifor after putting a hole in it and not had time to sort it yet

not sure that this is an Ajax OE job .... have a feeling I have seen one of these arms before somewhere, but damned if I can think where .. nicely made though and more than man enough to cope with the Ajax head .. has obviously been used in a wood shop at sometime .. covered in dust and oil mix .. stripped it down to clean it

came up nicely

stashed it all in a box after tea as it's forecast to pee down here tomorrow, 'til Thursday, on and off

had a quick shufty at te motor wiring, 'fore I paid for it this morning and looks like it'll have to be 3ph only ... or convert it to a 1ph motor ... VFD ain't gonna run it BTLs
guy also gave me these as he had now't they'll fit/run in ...

the long series must be 40 quids-worth and that's a nice countersink ... chuck key doesn't fit the 5/8" chuck that's in the #2MT spindle, but I'm sure to have a suitable candidate here
the brand new push button wants re-locating to a plate beside the motor -- PITA where it is. the rise and fall on the column is nice and smooth, as is the rack on the horizontal arm ... all in all a nice buy at 140 quid

with all the recent trailer losses off vehicles of late I fitted the bolt again .. although a Bradley double lock is nigh on impossible to lose if coupled correctly .... 's a triple lock, with the lock hole filled

would've gotten a lot further with the Ajax this afters, but Pam was back early from the hairdressers and had a 'can you just' .. that just couldn't wait ..... " my phone's in the house, can I borrow yours " Pam really goes for it taking pix ...

bloody Dane took some starting ... not been run since last October and did not want to have it ... but half an hour later with the plugs out and cooked, with a little mini blowtorch, filter off and cleaned (as a matter of course) and some carb cleaner down his snout, he was eventually purring.

Or a Plasma cutter. I did think the same initially, but thin tin is easy bashed through, sometimes quicker than it takes to set up a power tool.
It's sometimes good to work with your hands and basic tools, I lose about 50mm off my waist in Summer compared to Winter.

- BANG!! ... it had half a gallon-ish of engine oil in the bottom of the drum .... I NEVER show heat of any description to a sealed drum, even with the bungs out, it's a potential bomb ... had a customer kill himself, three of his blokes and take most of the roof off his workshop, opening an oil drum with the oxy, many years ago .... lesson learnt (not that I needed teaching it - he must've been mad)
like I said, it doesn't take long to go round the top with a good sharp cold chisel ... and 45s ain't what they used to be either

getting back to the Dane's exercising .... we have the Plymouth mob here at the end of the month and Pam'd decided it would be a good idea/great fun for the kids to have some 'trails' through the (now) 2 ft high grass ... so she roughed out some with the strimmer yesterday and had already decided that it wouldn't take me long to 'tidy them up'
Hers were only a metre wide though and as I pointed out, post strimming ... the Dane cuts at 5 ft wide, so not only did it have 2ft of cut to do it also had to cope with all the cut tish sat on the floor ... it copes better, when it knocks it down itself ... loose on the floor tends to block the cutting deck, 'fore it has a chance to mulch it up .... anyway, only stalled it twice and it was getting 'the beans' this afters, 'cos I knew what I had to contend with, from the off.

I've chosen a couple of pix out of the 50 odd she took

all needs raking up and I can drop the deck a notch and give it another once over to produce a tidy mowed finish ..... was very much a mask day today ... bloody pollen had me yesterday ... was gonna be worse down there today

well Pam raked it all up this morning EARLY (think she lives in a different time zone lately ), into one LARGE heap ........ we then spent two ****in' hrs going through it looking for her granny's hat pin that'd fallen out of her sun hat, whilst doing it
we didn't find it - she's not often 'sentimental' about stuff, but this proved the exception !!
I then went round it all again with the Dane's deck lowered to get a better cut, now all the stuff she'd originally knocked down with the strimmer, plus the extra two feet of width the Dane'd done, was out of the way ... looked a lot better for it and collected up what needed collecting - now't by comparison to yesterday's piles.
then shot off up the driveway with the Dane and did all the passing places which were looking like jungles, around the barn turning area and the top barn which I usually do for Phil & Phil - the guys who own them .. do it a couple of times a year to keep it looking tidier.

Was 'sposed to have been a WET afternoon here but hadn't materialised ... so thought I'd get the new Ajax's drill bits out and finish cleaning 'em up, 'fore re-assembling it, plus I wanted to make a support collar for the drill head to keep the motor's fan cover off the arm, when in line with it .... so ran the genny up, after i'd gotten set up ..
and knocked this up with a bit of 88.9 x 5 CHS ... just right dimensions for the job

then polished up the drill head's spigot ...

whipped the slider guide off the upright and introduced that to the Harrison and some emery

followed by the horizontal arm after I'd whipped the rack off it

both cleaned up well and bolted the slider guide and rack back into their respective positions

at this point, the threatened rain decided to materialise - in spades ....... I had just gotten the last of my gear back into a box as the heavens opened and it had another one of those biblical down pours for 45 minutes
so re-assembly took place indoors

clamped up, this is way more rigid than I'd imagined it would be ... should make for a very versatile weapon it's certainly very nicely made .. still not convinced it's an OE set up though and can't find anything like it on Ajax's site or the machine tool archive
the conventional Ajax bench drills're certainly making strong asking prices when you look about (but they were/are a quality drill)
@Grahams -- if you have a use/need this is very cheap (£80) on Flea bay ATM AND single phase -- in your neck of the woods .. total bargain in outstanding condition

was going to put some lectrickery through the motor while I had the genny running .. 'Til I noticed it had a 32A Legrand on the lead and could not be arsed to dig out a 32A extension lead ... so thought I'd just change the plug to the 16A that's more suited (but way over-kill), 'til I discovered I'm out of 16A spares ...so just ordered some ... got everything but
and last but not least for today ... and one for @Stock ... the new burning drum got a test drive, with a pile of tree prunings, this weeks packaging and a pint+ of engine oil (the dregs of the drum) .... went well

pretty resilient paint on the outside of the drum ..... but doubt it'll be therefor long

only issue I can see is you have to be able to invert the pulley on either the motor or quill/spindle, which isn't always possible as a lot of stepped pullies are 'hollow' .

had the top off the Ajax this evening (a) for a shufty as to the feasibility of doing summat like the above and (b) was looking to see if it was possible to fit a lift eye to it somehow and damn me there's a boss in the body casting, that I'd assume would be to take a jockey carrier for a set up similar to the ad. above?
however ......
neither pulley looks to be reversible -- the quill is fitted via a taper fit (very unusual) and the motor's pulley is VERY hollow .... the boss however could be utilised for a lift eye, although this head isn't more than 25kgs max. - just awkward with the belt cover in place ....

taper quill drive with LH nut holding it in place .......... and a lot of dust

motor / belt tensioner set up - novel design with a sort of cam arrangement - quite nifty

note the boss cast into the body
one very hollow motor pulley and the entire set up ..... the boss is a machined bore

as mentioned before ... everything's covered in wood dust... bit late to run the compressor tonight - kids tomorrow, so a Wed.s job to get it cleaned out ... the motor carrier plate has two positions and the spindle has another inch below the pulley bottom so might 'adjust' the set up a bit, to get the bottom of the motor up a bit, as looking at it tonight, now I've gotten inside it, the lift collar I made is not going to achieve what I wanted to, as the column casting isn't the usual solid item, but two separate rings, so the column length is critical
AND that push button box needs to be elsewhere ... nothing insurmountable though

earlier in the day I'd utilised the access holes for the SHCS,s that hold the rack and guide bar in position and which just happened to be a perfect 10.3mm hole ... for an M12 tap .. tapped them all whilst access was easy and for 'ron .. in case

can never have enough lift points for summat chunky/awkward


then it was mag drill time .....

and i just accidentally deleted this post ... so here it is again ...... when the files load
I'd set this out one evening and as it was nice and sunny, had some time getting it drilled

and gave the base a trial fit ..

then turned my attention to the other bench ...

that one hole drifted slightly and was hard as hell .. discovered after that it'd been repaired with 299,s BTLs .. hence being so bloody hard
this un' had to be tapped

the tee bar was hard work so a bit of 12mm off cut and could use the tap wrench

with the base secured I assembled the various bits and set up the spigot holder for upright ... parallel to the bench = upright

and fitted the spigot

this is quite handle-able in component parts and 'knocks down' fairly easily .. but the eyes are there if I ever want to lump it about built up
having stripped it i gave the base a try on t'other bench .. looked fine

that one drifter was a PITA so opened up the base's holes a mil and that sorted the issue
as said .. kids tomorrow .... AND it's the boss's birthday ... so not a lot'll get done tomorrow towards this lil' project

tha's an MG5 Frank, mine's an MG2 and was there yesterday .. it's at least 20+ years younger than mine ... they didn't change much, just improved on the engines

I've just spent half the evening reading 30 odd pages about these on another forum for reasons i cant recall , then I open this up and that's the first thing I see!! I think the universe is hinting

Simon on the dog an' bone first thing this morning .... HELP .. some ham fisted tw*t'd knackered the gear selector on a crucial machine yesterday afternoon - he'd got it out .. could he come over
nice little Phosphour bronze cast fork ... missing its spigot pin .. any ideas .. 3/8" pin ... luckily I had some 3/8" UNC bolts, with the right amount of shank on 'em

cleaned the remnants of the spigot off so I could see where to centre pop the hole and got out my best set of drills - the boxed fraction set - and put a 3/8" hole in the yoke .. bolt was a lovely fit and put a roll pin in to hold it in place

original collar back on t'other end and drilled that for its roll pin

'fore trimming the bolt off to length

miracles performed while you wait .... the impossible takes a little longer .. .... one happy camper and he was away to put the box back together and wrestle it back into the machine
was gonna mow some grass then ...... 'til it absolutely lashed down for a quarter of an hour .. and soaked it all
so turned me attention to the Ajax ... got all teh guts cleaned up and functioning nicely

after I'd blown all the years of wood crud out of there, stripped and polished all the components and reassembled it, with the motor mount plate inverted ....

motor on the bench ... for a spot of pulley removal ... which was some task ... slight burr on the spindle and it was gripping in some order ....

fan cover off for a reshape and clean out

... couple of the dents'd have to stay ... just wasn't worth the extended grief to get them out. ... then reassemble .. didn't take a lot of pix today, but you'll get the jist ... screws look a bit odd below, as had to avoid the rail mount in the box for the switch gear's contactor and I can assure you that although it doesn't look it there .. it's all square and true

had to keep it out a bit to be able to get at the motor mount's tensioner bolt lock .. but it's up and out the way there .. was going to put a surface mounted inlet plug on the back of the box, to simply connect a flying socket to .. no trailing leads then .. 'til I realised I'd only got 32Amp versions, so'll have to wait 'til I pick up a 16A one ... see if I can get one in town tomorrow .. very few on Ebay .. all expensive and Chinese, with three weeks delivery

Well it must have been a sign, ended up bringing this home today (combined with a work trip this morning it's been a 600 mile, 16hour day )
Been converted by a retired guy- proper tinkerer with home made sun following solar panels, wind turbines, battery banks and one of the most skillfully modified, -to make it arthritis friendly!!- series one land rovers I have ever seen, and his recently deceased father in law. Currently running 2 Chineseium 6.5hps, you can run either or both and came with the original engine which is apparently all good apart from the carb which has been repaired now, so could just be put back together. Starts, steers runs etc, I can either keep it as it is, put the original engine back in, or I quite fancy putting a honda gx390 in it.
The modifications are very small, basically a few extra holes.
It's one of the loudest, most frightening things I've ever driven at 2mph
After about 30 seconds though I had a handle on it, turns very nicely. I love how solidly and simply built it all is.
I paid a grand total of £700 for it, I was feeling slightly guilty about knocking him nearly in half on the price, but he told me several times he was genuinely pleased it had been bought by someone who was enthusiastic about it. Great guy with some interesting stories and toys, was there over an hour!
