What are you looking to achieve, a deterrent? Alerting? Maybe some evidential value? Monitoring for staff/safety?

Obviously Coverage is most important...make sure you've enough cameras.
Get decent quality at least 4mp.
Record time. You want at least 14 days.
Some cameras also have a SD card slot in case scroats nick NVR. Can also get cloud backup recording...
Deffo want app/ online remote access.
Decent lighting helps massively as well.
2.5k doesn't sound daft for a hardwired pro install

Worth adding ours has paid for itself several times over.
Just had 7k of gates replaced. Insurance paid up without a quibble...no arguments with CCTV
Had 5k cladding replaced a few years back from another dork of a driver took out side of building..claimed he hadn't hit it...soon as I mentioned CCTV they back peddled.

I've got Tapo ones and can't fault them tbf. SD card or £100 a year for cloud backup for up to 10 cameras. Ones I have are rechargeable weren't fully charged when installed at beginning of January and still on 36%.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
a clear line of sight for all the laser cannons automatically guided by the cameras .... before the little ba**tards in hoodies can get to the cameras

Same with dash cams, I’ve only one at the moment in the family wagon, but it’s getting that way that anything on the road needs one just to prove your own innocence!

Ok but every chance the other driver has them so imo it's a no brainer and I think if your driving for work you'd be daft not to have one unless you insist on driving like a pr*ck.

Got older model in car and im going to upgrade it soon as there are some 4k ones out now with loads of features.
Waay better than the halfords one i had before.The rear view is so wide i can see cars that are not in the wing mirrors.
It monitors all night too and locks any recording thats suspicious .
There are loads of em all over amazon at all prices.
Couple of yrs ago mine caught a transit van back into a car and drive off. Other people saw it but the camera was sharp enough to read no plate.
This helped the womans claim along nicely..

I've been playing with cameras/recorder. My kit came with 4x 5mp cameras and a recorder that will display from 9 cameras.
From a previous attempt to get something working, I bought a 1080p camera. The new recorder will talk to the 1080p camera, and display it next to a 5mp, so it's easy to see how horrid it is.
The recorder in my kit is spec'd for 4k, so silly me assumed it was supplied with 4k cameras (burnt again). I've just ordered one 4k camera to compare and hopefully number plates will be readable.
My 1080P is mounted above the workshop door and you can identify someone (you know) to about 6ft. Much beyond that, it's hard to tell if it's human or alien. It's not a camera to take seriously.
Depends if you just want a movement warning or if you need a pic that will stand up in court.
4/5mp is certainly min. spec, but consider 4k.

I've got 8mp hik at home. Incredibly good 
There's also a dark fighter range from HIK which are awesome at night. Clear as anything . Massive pet hate is CCTV that's blurry and crap. Pointless imo.

I 'think' 8mp is the same as 4k.

I'm also needing to upgrade ours cctv, need 12 cameras and be able to see / read number plates at night. Been a few cars burnt out opposite our yard of late

If that's Hikvision equipment it's too dear. Covid times they were £38 for a 5mp dome. I'm sure they've good up abit since probably £60 to £70 now.
Some of the advances in the AI camera software are amazing, detecting people from further away and no false alarms from wildlife. Find out more details on the spec, if there's a reluctance you know why
