yes supposedly by a strong wifi signal. The recordings are however kept on the micro SD within the camera so if someone was switched on enough to believe that to be the case they could just destroy or steal the camera.

However you can live view the camera and set it up to motion detection. I also believe the software will take still photos on motion detection mode and email them to you. Then if you can crack the next level of technology I believe there are ways to set the software up so you could store the video on a cloud/HD connected to your wifi but don't take that as gospel from me.

In my case I will just have the motion detection off ( I have a primary school 200 yards down the road) and I never really bought it for that reason. A guy owes me money and he doesn't seem to like the fact i served him a letter before action and am taking it small claims. It's not a lot but why get bullied off your money. It's just a bit of an insurance policy incase anything kicks off at my home address.

...and to think I had a price off the accountant to register my business there this year and was too tight to do it!

Above my pay grade @V8Druid. I think it has an Ethernet cable output Tbf but I'm using wifi anyway. The antenna is in the box

Just received my latest camera order to be installed on a local farm got a couple to do in the near future. I believe there’s a grant for it at the moment? Bit of a sideline for me as I’m an Agri mechanic full time. But this job keeps my experience in the IT sector current just in case I fancy a career change....



I’ve been keeping an eye on this thread and the recommendations are about right. Hikvision and Dahua are good value professional cameras. Rule of thumb is to stick to IP cameras as the flexibility on setup and power source gives you some major advantages.

Swann and the likes of the consumer items ain’t great by comparison, so unless after a cheap domestic setup then avoid them really.

Camera location is important to maximise the usability of the footage as evidence. Just think how many recordings you’ve seen on crime watch or Facebook where you can barely identify the person. This is why many cases get dropped. Unless the footage is good enough to spot someone you don’t know with pinpoint accuracy then it’s not really worth having. Therefore camera specification and location need to be matched.

I’m also fitting long range wireless links to some locations as cable runs would be tedious and costly. The prices for the equipment required to achieve this is fast dropping in price and a wireless link can cost as little as £160.

Any advice you need just ask...

Ok got it set up, installed and working. Seems an ok bit of kit. Fair value for sure. One thing I missed is that it's a 2 megapixel camera. They do one which is 5 megapixel for about 60 which I wish in hindsight I had bought. I can still read vehicle reg but not as clear as I would like. I may even upgrade.

Was a fiddle to install even for me. The motion detection recording seems to be working well. Lots of events due to busy road but as expected. I don't have notifications set up for this reason.

Be wary of Amazon reviews. I was impressed by the reviews on this and although I'm happy for the money I wish I found the higher image quality model before I ordered. The reviews are all OTT because they incentivise good reviews. They offer free SD cards to a selection of people who review so I'm guessing people are praising the kit for that reason!

Upgrade. If it's a struggle now in daylight, it'll be harder at night. If possible get one of their darkfighter cameras.

I’ve got a 4camera hikvision setup at my house (quickly thrown in to keep an eye on the place while being refurbed). They use rg59 cable, but at this point with no floors or plaster etc would I be better changing it for a cat5/6 cabled setup?

On a domestic installation changing to Cat 5/6 is less critical as you probably won't need the expandability. But I would do it anyway as having the house pre-rigged with network cabling is cheap and offers you lots of options for locating your router, NVR, printers and other network devices. Just renovating the farm house currently and we've dropped a network port into most rooms. All cables lead up to the loft to allow easy access to a connection point such as a switch etc...

Where having IP cameras helps is a site wide installation across separate buildings/ locations. You can site the NVR in the office whilst the image from camera that mounted 250 metres away is broadcast to it without having to run a cable back to the NVR direct from the camera. Add multiple cameras into the equation and you can save time and money.

So in short, if your current system is working I wouldn't bother replacing but if you plan to add other locations and expand then consider adding Cat 5/6 into the installation, it's easily added now before the plasterboard goes on.

Hikvision is the best. Don’t get distracted by cheap alternatives, buy cheap buy twice.

ideally you want an internet connection as you say you don’t need to login, but it is nice to be able to take a look remotely. Otherwise you can install as big a hard drive as you need, dependant on how many cameras and camera MP you have will determine the hard drive size.

HD-TVI and a DVR will be cheaper than IP cameras and an NVR.

You can use network cat 5/6 cable for both, plus that future proofs it within reason, just a little bit of a fiddle wiring connectors up for cameras etc.

if you need any advice or got a budget, happy to point in right direction.

Think I've found a buyer for the 2mp cam. Auntie came by and was impressed by it so think I'm gonna order the 5mp, then fit this 2mp at hers. I explained that it's not as good as the 5mp but she was impressed with how clear it was so wants it on her summer house.
