Get it near the van on rollers then roll it onto its back into the back of the van then slide it forward with ratchet straps and rollers?

I once thought it would be a good idea to go get a horizontal mill from over a hour away I got there and there was no way to load it I managed to slide it up the trailer ramps with a winch and a few bits of scaff tube. It was definitely a lot easier unloading it with the forklift 😲
Yes thats similar to what I'm thinking at the mo.
Something along the lines of using the chaps rafters as an aid to lower the drill, lower the top of the drill onto wood thats van height and then use an engine hoist to manipulate the head of the drill into the van. Then I'll put that down there on rollers, and go and pick up the back end of the drill with the hoist and hopefully roll it forward towards the front of the van. Sounds simple enough.
Two main issues I've thought of are getting the drill up to its tipping point, and what if his rafters aren't beefy enough.
1- should just be able to use a combination of levers, jacks and pushing.
2- I've requested photos of the rafters to see what they look like. if they don't look like they're up to the task I'll build a 3 or 4 legged frame that I'll use to attach the winch, snatch block or somthing to to lower the drill down and use that. That'll have to be able to fit in the back of the van and be taller or the same height as the drill (84 inches). should be fairly easy made of either wood, I beam i've got lying around or acrow props joined at the top.
His doorway is 84 inches +10mm apparently so sounds like it might have to be tipped in the workshop.
If that didn't make sense wait for the photos of it happening... Should all unfold on sunday :ROFLMAO:

I've used tower scaffold before now with half a acrow strapped to it
I have quite a bit of scaffold a frame would probably consist of scaffold acrow and I beam I imagine.
Just got a reply from him saying that he didn't think his rafters looked promising unfortunately.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
I'll take you some pix of a couple of tripods I used to use for handling lumpy stuff .... all knock down easily ... pretty sure i still have the 'heads' .... legs just slot in and whatever length you need ;) ... hang a chain block or pull lift off 'em and away you go (y)

That’d be ideal, thanks Druid (y)

Do you have an engine hoist you can use to lift the drill? It may be easier for you to unbolt the Top half off the base and move it in sections. I think there is only 4 bolts holding it together.

Four bolts? That sounds promising. I have access to an engine hoist and plan to take one with me. However I don’t think it will be big enough to lift the drill and get it laying on its side safely, I was just looking at picking up a cheap Chinese chain block off amazon (silverline or something), don’t see the point in spending lots on it as I’ve got a telehandler or tractor do do that kind of stuff at home, and then using the chain block and a stand of this chaps rsj in his workshop to lower the drill onto its side.

Could you not go with a trailer instead? Use the crane to lower it onto a couple of pallets and drag/winch onto trailer.

Yeah, the last thing you need is to put your back out trying to avoid the van roof. Trailer all the way.

Yeah it would be much easier with a trailer but it’d mean I’d have to get someone else to drive. No trailer license yet :cautious:
I have been thinking about it though.

usually a gert weight on a chain trailing down through the column too, from memory, counterbalancing the rise/fall on the quills .... may not come out with the chain attached

I don't think the leccy should be a problem, I'm trying to leave it together so hopefully thats not an issue... Famous last words.
Found a block and tackle today in the shed, that should do the job, although I'm thinking about ways to lower it to the floor maybe using an acrow or something built out of threaded maybe. Still totally undecided how to do it.
I'm down near Exeter in Devon, I doubt you're close nothing ever is hahah

Everything is so simple in farming...
Just load the trailer with silage, can't even get out the gateway without picking up that wire you meant to pick up the last 50 times you've been past it...:cautious::oops:
Cordless grinder make that a 5 min job to free which is good, bloody high tensile wire, horrible stuff to cut with snips.

Hmm know the feeling of this, bought a lathe off eBay last year, turned out was in domestic house with zero kit. Took our ifor with winch and pallet truck and stack of skids etc. Got in on in the end but was fun.. don't underestimate the help of lumps of wood!🤪 Low lift pallet truck very handy with a set of ramps. engine hoist are flippin handy, wish we'd had one...Just make sure you get pics!😉

Well it didn't go. Oops. Now looking for someone around worcester with a forklift or HIAB we can use......
Awesome looking drill mind, but the guy I went with was just not happy with trying to tip it over, even though I thought it could be done. Bummer.
