Gra - when you sign up for FIT it's at the rate when its taken out.
So ours on 2015 was for 20 years until 2035.
In 2015 the initial FIT deal was:
Generation 12.92p/kWh
Export 4.85p/kWh
Each year, on 31st March, it has increased slightly in accordance with the RPI
In 2021 (March) it was set at:
Generation 14.65p/kWh
Export 5.5p/kWh
These rates are set by Ofgen and the rates are on table in their web site - OFGEN
In the 6 years or so of owning our 4kW Solar Array the FIT payments have now paid for the investment :cool:
No doubt there will be an even bigger increase on 31st March 2022 in accordance with the runaway RPI.....

From experience not nearly as much as you would think as if that was the case our house would be more expensive to run than the neighbors as all houses are identical. But it's not despite how hot my wife keeps the house. All other houses on the street are on radiators.
The boards are foil backed to send heat upwards.

Definitely not inefficient enough to warrant digging the floors up especially on a house you intend to do up and move on quickly.

point being to move from oil to a heat pump and keep radiators would mean they would need to treble in size which isnt ideal. Hence moving to underfloor and without insulation you are throwing away money. Heat pumps can cost north of £500 a month to run in winter if you have a lot of hot water demand and they cant do heat and hot water at the same time so the less heating demand the better!

Foil under the floor is pointless really as heat rises. The passivhaus guys have got it cracked, the issue they face is with enough glazing they have to stop them overheating.

goes up by RPI every year, compounding really is great!

And Mr musk is in control of it. So one day you go use your electric and find none as he has fed it back into the system for the greater good


not sure where you get that from but its not true. The owner has full control. There are tariffs whereby they give it you cheaper 24x7 in return for borrowing your powerwall instead of timeshifting.

You may have full control ATM
Everything is there and all the connectivity is there for him to do as he likes. Which has already been proven true on his cars.

New builds don't leave you much option these days:

"There will be a maximum flow temperature requirement of 55°C for new and replacement heating systems, as part of the Part L uplift"

so you can see where this is going...or gone..

doesn't stop the tanks being hotter, in fact they have to do a cycle for legionnaires. Heat pumps are ideal for 45-55c.

When my dad inquired they said the latest version requires an internet connection to work. It's why he didn't go for it.
It not conspiracy theories, it will happen sooner or later for the greater good.

So, we are on on OIL CH and have been for the 34 years that we have lived here 'cos I installed it.

BUT about 20 years ago, I also installed a Horstmann Maxistore Immersion Heater Timer.....

The beauty of this timer is the advantages when you are on an 'Economy 7 tariff'
  1. Turn yer OIL heating off completely in the summer
  2. Grab a large tank of 70c hot water during the night
  3. Boost it during the day when solar PV kicks in (note the boost lamp is on)
As I say this has been what we have been doing for many years now and seems to work for us :cool:
Now gotta scheme how to get ready to ADD an Air (or ground) source heat pump to the mix.....
Meanwhile, I continue to fettle my ex-Army big fcuk off Gen Set in true @JD450A Rory Prepper Style 🤠

So, after 70 odd replies to this thread, what I'm looking at is fitting solar panels to the roof of the shed so it can help supply electric through the day for lights or anything else that uses it, it'll be connected up to the mains but no feed in rate just we use it if being made and when we don't need it it'll just feed in. If we put 8KW of panels on the roof during the day any power being produced will be used up and more so will help reduce electric bill. Lights are on 6 and half days a week, more sometimes.
What we're trying to get our heads round is the cost of panels and inverter, cost of installation and return of reduced electricity bills. Does it add up? 🧐

purely maths, battery before solar makes financial sense as you can immediately move to time of day tariff and pay cheap rate.

There's only one thing you've got wrong there, if you're tank is boosted to 70 through night it's beyond where the efficiency is for solar top up. Most of the energy is used in the first 30 deg of temp rise this is where you find the best efficiency gains.

Off topic but..
Out of interest we run a mitsi heatpump ..old random 1920s bungalow that's been pulled apart more times than we can figure.
About half is on ufloor htg.
Rest is all brand new decent rads.
With all this talk I've been looking at my meter!
Just calculated it cost me average £300 a month to run last year at today's crazy leccy prices😳😳😆 but that's 5 folk and 3 showers and she likes it warmmm🙃
And I get £120 RHI a month off that. We used to pay £150 on oil only previously...so gives an idea to anyone interested..not saying it's cheap but that's our situ.
Do have big woodburner tho...👍
But what else is the option? I've hardly any south facing roof...?
