In the UK our max on a 4x2 is 18t but I doubt there is any difference
Check the axle weights for the front axle
Often lorry's that size over here are built on stretched tractor units and have stupidly low front axle weights.
Over here I've seen 2 different bin lengths and 2 different wheelbase on 18t hookloaders. Obviously the shorter ones will have a tighter turning circle.
I don't know how your taxes and cost work over there as to whether its worth it but if you are looking at that size the 26t on 3 axles are actually more maneuverable especially if they have a tag axle

Went to look at the merc wagon this morning and went "double de clutching" the 8speed round the area for 1/2 hr - all good although noticed some white smoke under load for a bit that seemed to go after a while ..... bloke with me said egr .... me I know knothing.

Most modern trucks with adblue, tend to produce a lot of condensation out of the exhaust while warming up.

Might benefit taking it to an axle weighbridge with the machine on to see where its best to position the machine for transport. Then mark the body so you know you 100% legit.

We don't get any hassle locally at present, I saw the chassis was marked, I think it indicated where hook gear had to be mounted to have middle of skip in best position for weight distribution ... but there will be no wiggle room with 8t on it , it will be arse against the headboard to get it in a 5m skip - I don't know where the centre line weight wise of an 8t in transport position is but im guessing the front axle may be quite heavy

I don`t know what the score is over there, do you have a ministry plate, rather than the manufactures plate that says legal weight and design weights?
If there is, and the design weight is higher, (over here) its a paper work submission to change the plate to the higher weight and change the tyres to ones with the correct load rating for that weight (you have to specify on the paper work), usually no need to be checked, it will be done at the next MOT test.

There's a fair bit of weight in counterweight on an 8 ton and I'd bet it could be fairly ar*e heavy. I know the extra 35mm thickness added to the middle on a 2 piece taki 290 adds 210kg so there must be a fair bit of weight to begin with.

Yes looking at it I imagine it's going to sit a bit heavy on front .... but what's the expression "if it's on its gone"

So might a decent guesstimate be when skip is on that front axle has about 3.5t left before its on its plated limit

Right it's a 7 t axle... A 8t machine is pretty well balanced with the boom packed down. And so the diggers going to be sat spreading the load on both axles....

That's what I was thinking but don't want a f**k up and to be wishing I'd gone 6x2

You won't.

Reality is a 6x2 is almost certainly too big

No feasible its 2.5hrs away .... might be gone anyhow, will find out Wed.
But it's 8120t + 1.6t skip so call it 10t ... leaves plenty for 8.2t digger and odd bucket .....mostly buckets will follow in dumper.
