how about using concrete pre stressed beams (block and beam) butted together and concreted.

We use them for garage floors so can easily take the weight and nothing to rot.
Weight.

armco ... toes up and stitched together .. end plated maybe 4" above toes and flood with concrete - maybe a re-mesh layer a few inches below surface ? .... be easier finding s/h armco in 12fts than finding decent crossing sleepers

shouldnt be an issue as they are supported at the bank ?
Its the extra weight of the deck which then means the steels have to go up in size to carry the deck weight plus any load going over it. We're back to the do it as it's been done before or get engineer involved and it'll never get done due to cost scenario

.........remember that Bridge. Turns out that the parish Council are now keen to get it sorted.
AND they want little old me to 'quote' for the job

4 x RSJ Steels between brick piers which seem sound enough
12 foot long reclaimed sleepers - 18 of the big 12" ones

Sleeper ends all going rotten. Covered with plywood!

The plywood covering is now going rotten. Revealing the completely rotted out sleepers below.
You can see the water flowing below this one

Have written to the Parish Council with estimates (don't do quotes) and various options.
My favoured option is to replace all the 12 foot sleepers with 'new' grade A reclaimed ones
And IF I get involved, will be using a business partner with experience of civil and stuff like this ;)
At the moment struggling to find a supplier for these...

So there you have it guys - suggestions on a postcard please :ROFLMAO:
Speak to beaver bridges they‘ll prefab you one then just lift in to 2 concrete head walls

i priced one doing it myself etc But they were cheaper and better

Thanks for your information and advice. So useful from someone who has done it before
I think that the expectation was that I would simply rock up with a trailer loads of old sleepers and sort it out ;)

And even then it was suggested that a quick fix for under £1000 would get immediate approval.
So I have written back, suggesting that even the supply of replacement sleepers (like for like) would be far in excess of this.
Funny how it's all gone quiet with no reply to date.....

I am a simple sole trader with a mini digger, dumper, trailers and assorted plant.
And no my insurance does NOT cover me for this work, but I have a business partner who does ;)

BUT like anything that we get involved with using machines, it's interested and something different 🤠

That is a great recommendation - thanks (y)
Just had a quick look at Beaver Bridges web site and Facebook pages
Really cool stuff going on.
Perhaps, I simply pass this recommendation on and step back ;)

could well be a sensible idea ... have built a few over the years and there's a lot to fabbing 'em .... the least of which is getting 'em calc.ed properly .... like for like would be the only sensible route to avoid comebacks, without involving SEs and then the costs'll rise ... a 'turnkey' solution from Beavers'd be the most sensible for sure (y) and possibly the cheapest option, after a like for like replacement of the deck

Agree with all of that Gra (y)
Probably gonna meet my BIL later this week to see if we can do a like for like......
......and he can take the lead 🤠
He know loads of stuff and can buy me a 'fat boys breakfast' after the site meeting 😋

if you can achieve a like for like solution at a sensible cost, it might be worth their investing in some s/h ali track mat, rather than ply-ing it over ... would breathe and drain way better, add structural integrity to the job and last a whole lot longer - at a price - depends on how far sighted they are ;)

Just a thought but aren't reclaimed sleepers usually shorter than 12 foot. There was a bridge near me washed away in storm desmond (2015) and the sleepers on it were longer than the norm (could easy have been 12 foot) and I'm sure they were Russian origin and v rare.

Pam's vegie boxes are made out of 12' crossing sleepers .. came from America (long story) and most of them are hardwood and 15" wide

this bloke has them up to 5.5m .... reckon you'd need to go there and sort exactly what you need though Dave @Routy56 to be sure of getting some decent usable specimens
..... but not gonna be cheap at £12.50/m ..... be worth investigating the cost of new TBH

Only thing with the new sleepers you get, they seem to be rubbish and don`t last anything like the old ones. Modern nice and kind treatment vs old carcinogenic treatments I suppose
