Electric vehicles

They better hurry up and find an alternative
Be it electric hydrogen methane or thin air
No need to work about driver shortages when there's nothing for them to drive

Its funny really isn't over here a lot get bleary eyed over how cheap yank pickups are in comparison to what we have over here, yet at the same time financially Ford are on their ar*e and have been for years. Still if you wanna subsidise soccer moms taking their kids to maccy d's
It takes a soccer field to turn my ford around. Lol.

It'll come I guess. Seems consumers are currently obsessed with leccys...since media told em worlds gonna end unless we all get em
Unfortunately I don't see the government leaving you alone to just carry on with your old diesel vehicle. They seem to have decided to go down the electric route, so short of going back to horse and carts we will have to do something or not go to work. Not a problem for paperpushers ie. politicians and their advisors as they can work from home and "important" people will I'm sure be issued with exemptions.

No where in any of the government stuff does it actually say the vehicles of the future have to be electric. It says they can't be petrol or diesel. There are currently far more propulsion methods in development than just electric and we currently have no idea what will win.
I would guess there will be various things
Full electric will suit some but most likely hybrids will be in the best position to replace most cars. Possibly with hydrogen as the main power source. Reading everything hydrogen currently makes the most sense for the future. As we already have a fuel delivery network in place.
And it can be produced using excess energy from the grid close to the power stations.
What winds me up though is that we have to make all these concessions with cars but far bigger problems are ignored, simple things like the sheer quantity of vehicles on the roads. Especially at peak times. And the ridiculous quantity of plastic that has to be used at every available opertunity, why can't they ban excess packaging in the super markets, would make an enormous impact very quickly

I agree, It took me 6 hours to get back from a job on Friday that had been taking me 4 during lockdown, but who shouldn't be allowed on the roads? I think I should be allowed to drive when I want. That is the difficult bit.

To be fair round my way they are testing electric scooters. There great little things. Voi manage them and there’s hundreds. You download the app and it’s 20p a mile or something. So instead of driving to work people are actually using these things . The only negative is the town is littered with them and people leave them in stupid places

There’s two right by me now , can use them to get into town etc . Great for youngsters who don’t drive etc

Instantly I think the school run should be targeted
The ques of cars sat idling in traffic to drop a single child of around here is unbelievable especially when it's so easy to put busses on for them as they are going to centralized destinations. Then another good move would be incentivize group travel. Surely big offices must have at least some people coming from similar locations. People can still travel there just needs to be a group effort to reduce travel. Better public transport better parcel delivery networks and so on.

And I saw the electric scooter when I went to Paris. The operating companies had vans go round to pick them up if left in a mess as they fined if left for to long. I think they are a great idea and the Boris bikes.

It just needs to be a group effort otherwise it will get to the point that the government start to restrict our freedom as they now know they can after all the lockdowns

That is also where electric vehicles win.

We had my security man round doing a few updates recently and at lunch he sat in his van, engine on air con on for about 40 mins.

In the leccy vehicle all that works without anything at all. The OH parks up at school and waits in comfort. Now yes we are plugged in at night charging so somewhere somebody is making me some leccy but its likely a lot less harmfull than the 2.0tdi we used to own

That doesn't help the volume of cars on the road
those cars have to be made which is very polluting
They then block the roads up so there are non electric vehicles idling and not to mention regardless of propulsion blocked slow roads arnt as efficient as free running roads
They are still on the roads which have to be maintained which is tarmac and concrete which is the single biggest polluter in the world
When you could have a single 50 seater bus
Moving 50 children rather than 100 children and parents in individual cars
50 cars weighs 65+tonnes
A single bus or coach weighs nearer 10t
That's all extra weight being neadlessly moved around and regardless of propulsion method is wasteful
A bus to School doesn't detract from anyone
The kids still get to school
Therefore A very easy way to cut pollution

Agree.... interesting that it's the "posh" schools that use busses...round here yet they "normal" schools are the ones clogged with X5s and Other tarmac trucks.
Farmer told me that they always used to get picked up on bus out here...once they had walked half a mile down the lane ..seems we are worse now at eco tish than the common sense days.

Sorry i was really only picking up on the idling comment.

Agree with buses, our eldest catches the bus but it also has a cost of £750 a year for parents. The school is 3 miles away but sadly not something you can walk. I think if it was free then it would get more uptake. However the company's putting the busses on are privately owned.

Always amuses me when I see the private school children waiting for their buses in the middle of our village. They are there probably an hour before they would need to leave if their parents drove them direct and starting the day soaking wet and cold in winter isn't much fun. Then at the end of the day they get home hours later than our local comp that finishes about 3 Monday to Thursday, lunch time Friday.Their parents pay double for their schooling which leaves them less to spend on other things and people still think it easy life for "posh" kids.

On the subject of cutting pollution I firmly believe in the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy approach..... Fake a incoming cataclysm, build 3 enormous ships, one for the dooers, one for the thinkers and one for the middle management types, phone sanitisers etc...... The management class best go first as we will need them on the next planet before us to organise things....... We will also need a fourth ship for those that do nothing.... That one best go second.
