Oh honestly dont waste your time on old trailers😂. Rarely worth it. I have this thing- buy a trailer brand new, keep it a few years and sell it for a new one- the depreciation is very low and much cheaper than trying to get a dog back together- I've not had to touch a trailer for years!

Agreed, I missed the boat on that with my lm146. Stuck a set of wheels and tyres on it and a couple of bits, few years down the line I'm doing a major overhaul. Changing at the right time would probably have cost less than just the floor will cost me 😆 🤣

Having said that I now have half a dozen trailers so they all get a little bit of use so don't wear anywhere near as quick as the lm146 did the first couple of years 🤷🏻🤷🏻🤷🏻

Yep now my post has been well and truly hijacked I can confess that my main and favourite trailer is my LM146 😎
And when I last replaced the floor I used an old front board on top to protect it from chucking my digger buckets on it. Front boards still like new but now need that skinny one at the back 🤪
Jack is coming over tomorrow and I show him how to inspect the brakes on the GX105HD and make a list of parts 🥸

Hopefully he didn’t spend a lot acquiring it.
You can buy a dog for £1000 but one without a floor must be a bargain to make it worthwhile!! The good thing, done properly it can give many years trouble free service while whatever you buy secondhand can still need ££££ if you don’t know what you are buying!

Owned from new by the construction company where he is a director and project manager. He knows that being semi-retired then I'll do a proper job. Trailer owes them nothing and is useful as and when required. Main thing is to make it safe and ready to use again ;)

Nice project for the Grandson & any practical skills that he is able to learn has to be a good thing.

What about aluminium checker plate for the floor. Is there must difference in price. I had it put in mine when I bought it
not gonna get a sheet of Ali 5 bar in those dimensions though ...... hard enough to find a 10' x 5' sheet of ali -- 's all 3m x 1.5m these days ... Most mills have stopped rolling imperial 3050 x 1525 sheets years ago .. was hard enough getting imperial steel sheets - special order de-coil usually :(
as Bri says, boards're the way to go - easily replace bits - Keruing is as Alex says - mental ...
some decent sawn 28mm, saturated in creosote, 2-3mm gapped to cope with the wet - job done (y)

What about mesh? Chap I know has a mesh floor . It never needs washing out :)
Personally if I was trying to keep cost down I’d probably use some scaffold boards and treat them well first with something black and nasty.

Trouble with Scaff boards is the weight. For those that try to keep as close to 3500kg as they can Scaff boards would be a nightmare!!

yeh heavy mesh'd be good ..... can get 2" x 2" in a 5mm wire and 12' x 6'/7' sheets and galv. .. just needs plenty of support ... no good if you want the odd load of sand/agg. :ROFLMAO:
scaff boards are as said - heavy, but good load bearing .. combination of both with the boards removable? Tied together with some strapping/webbing, nailed to them, so you could simply roll them up when not needed - fit them across the bed in two 5ft sections'd make them handle-able, rolled up
strapped/webbed together they'd not wanna bounce about empty

So on with the GX105HD refurb project with Jack, we pulled it apart and did an assessment today :geek:
And it's very much worth doing guys. Gonna go with the genuine Ifor Williams (3025mm x 1575mm) floor at £472.80 at our local dealers.
They have it in stock and hoping for a discount.
No gaps, no joints and must ensure that the groundworker monkeys during use it for tarmac again :(
Son in law told me today that they are going to add a Transit Tipper to their fleet for occasional tarmac
Hopefully not one of those new wet belt bomb things. They had one go bang only this week at 90k with regular servicing

IMG_5461.jpeg

So here's Jack learning more new skills. He's already cleaning of the rust with wire brush cup and sanding disc on the grinder.
Two coats of etch primer followed by two of black bitumen paint. What's not to like :giggle:

IMG_5460.jpeg

Showed him the 3/4" drive 46mm socket and scaffolding pole trick

IMG_5459.jpeg

New brake shoes ordered

IMG_5446.jpeg

With all new Bowden Cables etc etc etc

And 3 x new tyres on order

Nice little project for my grandson and his old fart granddad :ROFLMAO:

We like Jack!
How many kids even wear a boiler suit these days 👌🏼
Thanks - that's nice to know (y)
He's a good kid, keen to learn. He rocks up most Saturdays with his kit bag full of PPE, clean boiler suit and boots.
And he now brings his two tool boxes
Doesn't even give it a thought when I say, "Righto, let's get kitted up"
Ryan was the same when he was with us just after the first lockdown ;)

Jack 09 ish deserves his own place on the forum !
I’ll let him know and see if he’s interested 😉
Today over the 3pm cuppa ☕️ with biscuits 🍪 he was showing me his TikTok feed - something about the planets 🪐 all lined up 😲
And blow me down as I took him home we looked up and saw at least 3 planets 🪐 up there all glowing brightly ☺️
The school of learning never takes a day off 🤓

That's weird. My eldest (16) said something similar on way back tonight and there was a bright thing in the sky😆 apparently not a helicopter 🫣🫣

Something worth doing when you are this far is adding some strengtheners in front to back like this.

Its a big help with wheeled machines and helps to save the floor as the weight doesn’t fall between the chimes.

Ah Aiden - you’re a star ⭐️ for posting this real life example as a suggestion 👍🏻
They have a roller and dumper which beats up the boards.
So looks like I’m gonna have to show Jack the dark art of MIG welding 😈 before we screw the floor down 😉
