The 574 should be a shuttle gear box? So you actually have 4 reverse speeds.

Lots of spec for the money compared to a ford. My 454 did me well as a starter tractor years ago.

You have 4 reverse speeds, but it’s not a shuttle has you have 8 forward speeds. Have 4 gears, then High, Low and Reverse. TA was an option on the bigger ones

Is a 574 bigger than a 135 doob? How does a shuttle box work ? Is it 4 gears and a fwd and reverse lever ?

A 574 is the same size class as a MF165 etc, 354, 444, 454 would be more 135 size. Never got a shuttle box in an IH until the 85/95 series.
Small lever on left is 1,2,3,4. Big lever on left is High Forward, Low Forward and Reverse. So a total of 8 forward and 4 reverse.

Fair point. I meant kind of like a shuttle in that you just shunt from reverse into high, keeping the gear the same?

I remember mine used to work great for loader work in maybe high 2/reverse 2? It's been a while! Regardless, much better than the 1-2-3-R offered by the more popular Fords etc of that vintage.

For a grand less than a equivalent power ford 3000 or 4000, the International 454 gave me pickup hitch, power steering, 'shuttle' gearbox, twin speed PTO and a 'proper' front loader with power tilt- all of which were lacking on a Ford 3000. I would recommend them to anyone as a starter or yard tractor. For OP, I think the lack of 4wd means he's best looking for a more modern compact.

I do need to actually weigh up where I will need 4x4. Given that I will have access to my diggers when I want them there as well (should be my yard as well as house there all being well)
I was in the field this morning plotting corners and it seems massive for a compact tractor 😳

We run three 2wd and one 4wd. Our policy is something along the lines of if you need 4wd for field work, you shouldn’t be doing fieldwork, doing more damage than good. Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t do without the 4wd, just saying everything has its place

4wd on a tractor is far more than just about getting stuck. Less torque through 4 wheels over more torque through 2 wheels is a benefit for lot of reasons. Mostly long term soil health. Itb also helps steer and allows better working on slopes.
Generally if you need 4wd to stop you getting stuck it's too late.

IH did a hydro, can’t remember what the number was but it was about the same size as a 574. The farm where Dad worked had an early one, and Dad was very sceptical. He tried it on the baler and reckoned it was the best tractor he’d ever baled with. I’d imagine for the same reasons a hydro would be fantastic on a larger mower or mulched. Don’t know whether there are many about second hand, not something I look for. Farm I started on had two 674’s, both reliable tractors, except as mentioned the gear linkage needed to be kept in adjustment.

Think the 454, 475 and 574 where the models hydro was available on. Think the biggest issue with it was that it was just ahead of its time, from memory speed is controlled with a lever on the left of the dash?
