That’s a completely new one on me, Gra. can’t help thinking it’s a false economy in the grand scheme of how heavy a big crane is, especially when you see one like that folded up like a Skegness deck chair.

's the only way that'd fold like that .... probably too thin a wall ... t'other one is on the floor 'spect they'd be pushing 5+t the pair, for solid rods ... all counts when you're trying to get down to 12t/axle.. that's folded 'cos the boom folded and took it with it .. would guess too strong a side wind took the load and it was ''goodnight Vienna'' ......... and I'd also guess that's in China

Not necessarily.
If you compare a 100mm solid rod (62kg/m) with a 100mm tube with, say, a 60mm ID, then the tube will be 22kg/m lighter and only minimally less stiff - a trade off that may or may not be a good call.
However, if you used a tube 150mm with a 115mm ID, it still weighs 62kg/m but is very much stiffer.

But then you need a much bigger cylinder, piston etc. I suppose someone has done the figures And decided they stack up.
