Not all companies deal with this the same way. JCB give them a serial number, replace anything that needs it and sell them on as a used machine. Cat won’t sell or split for parts a development machine in the UK because of the risk of litigation. Also they don’t have a “book value” as we understand it, there will be a whole development project cost against which the value of the machine is a small part.

Isn't selling a development machine difficult as the tax man wants his v.a.t. on the whole cost of the machine including the r&d ?
You’d have to ask someone from JCB how they go on.

Regarding these development machines, if you bought one and a prototype part failed, how would you replace it? You wouldn’t be able to buy that part from the manufacturer, dealer, or even the component supplier as it would be licensed to the manufacturer. If it was a software issue some files are one-offs for the project the machine was part of. You’d be pee’d off having a 20 tonne paperweight stuck on the edge of a site and probably wouldn’t think too highly of the company you’d bought it from. From a manufacturer’s point of view it’s safer to scrap than sell.

I’ve seen people get really wound up about some of the machines I’ve scrapped off. Usual answer is; it’s not your machine, your money or any of your business, so why are you getting worked up?
