i recognise that...Did it come from a used plant company in Surrey/Hampshire border? looks like one of ours, have used them a bit theyre ok if a bit heavy.

out of reading auction and there was a bigger one ,i did find the pics of the buckets for sale at the plant firm

So original poster wants advice on 2 cheap thumbs. We set into arguments other what is then better. With no reference to the budget he first set!!! 
My kx71-3 had a manual thumb fitted from digbits. FOR THE MONEY it was very worthwhile.
When I went onto the Engcon, it stayed on for about 5 mins as the geometry was never right on the new set up!! I also found the scandi bucket very useful being able to tilt and rotate it helped retain a lot more stuff in the bucket. But in fairness, it is not a grab in anyway possible. I no have a 4.1 bucket for the 8ton kobelco. But if dealing with timber or handling rocks I can see that a dedicated grab would be better. It might be useful if some of those with grabs give an indication of what they cost to give the OP a better idea if increasing the budget would give a batter return.

My only suggestion was to go for the RSL thumb instead of the ones he suggested as for similar price RSL is a better design IMO. Probably buy and fit a thumb for under a grand for a 1.8t machine a intermercato grab (non rotating) for that size is about £1500 for that size machine.So original poster wants advice on 2 cheap thumbs. Think the Kubota u17 though is on a pedal and there's less movements to be done using a thumb than a grab. A grab everything has to be done with the pedal to operate whereas a hyd thumb you can just put it out roughly to position and let the accurate bit be controlled by the bucket curl.
Maybe it's just the type of work I do but I have 2x machines with intermercato and theyre great grabs but the 3rd machine with the thumb is nearly always my go to machine for general purpose work.

Think it's a mix of things- wanting to get something 'better' this time, not wanting something with potential to abuse on a machine that occasionally goes out on hire and probably me not wanting to take a welder to a newer digger

At least your 217 has a dipper made off proper metal rather than some shite casting so should be a straightforward fix.
