My only suggestion was to go for the RSL thumb instead of the ones he suggested as for similar price RSL is a better design IMO. Probably buy and fit a thumb for under a grand for a 1.8t machine a intermercato grab (non rotating) for that size is about Β£1500 for that size machine. So original poster wants advice on 2 cheap thumbs. We set into arguments other what is then better. With no reference to the budget he first set!!!
My kx71-3 had a manual thumb fitted from digbits. FOR THE MONEY it was very worthwhile.
When I went onto the Engcon, it stayed on for about 5 mins as the geometry was never right on the new set up!! I also found the scandi bucket very useful being able to tilt and rotate it helped retain a lot more stuff in the bucket. But in fairness, it is not a grab in anyway possible. I no have a 4.1 bucket for the 8ton kobelco. But if dealing with timber or handling rocks I can see that a dedicated grab would be better. It might be useful if some of those with grabs give an indication of what they cost to give the OP a better idea if increasing the budget would give a batter return.
I do love this forum!!![]()
dont know ,it was on 45mm pinsdid the bigger one sell Bob?
work smarter, not harderThis is how lazy I've become. Sooner fire up the nearby duck than unload a load of old timber on to the bonfire. Underneath that there is some sodden lengths which were surprisingly heavy before anyone comments how pathetic this is

At least your 217 has a dipper made off proper metal rather than some shite casting so should be a straightforward fix. Deffo go hydraulic though this time of you do go down this road alternatively I might have an intermercato for sale soon which would suit your machineHad a thumb on the kubota from day 1, moved a lot of timber with it (and the odd bin) and on the Case, both RSL manuals
Very useful, low cost, good lifting power, always to hand- so why haven't I fitted one on the 217?Think it's a mix of things- wanting to get something 'better' this time, not wanting something with potential to abuse on a machine that occasionally goes out on hire and probably me not wanting to take a welder to a newer digger

This is why you shouldn't get carried away at auctions, you end up with photos of wheelie bins on your phone![]()
