Do you gradient the laser then for a falling pipe or does the idig do that bit with a flat plane laser
As @Gunners explained to me if your doing a trench you can set gradient with the idig by moving the machine and then going to the last bit of trench that was correct and reset it or you set a laser up to the same gradient and re catch the laser every time you move . It won’t work with a laser if the laser doesn’t do gradients .

So laser alone will do the gradient which is what I thought originally obviously with the laser catcher?

Yes . Catching the laser every move is very quick and in no time you get into the habit of it . I used mine to dig the found at my own house but my right hand man was using laser staff to be sure as it was the first time I’d used it . By the end of the dig he was playing poker on his phone !

Idig or something similar is something I want to get into oneday. I think id use it with the laser more than anything, what’s the working window with the laser? Ie the receiver catch area? I have machine mount receivers but they are only a small window so really only any good on the grading beam.

It only needs to catch the laser once you move and it won’t matter what height it’s at as the I dig will be working to a set distance below or above the laser so once it catches it it will know where it is .

I’m very impressed with it . So much so I’m inquiring about the cost to set the other machines up so I can use it in them as well .

I think you have to use it with a laser so it’s always got that datum

By my understanding as mentioned you have to set laser and idig up both with same gradient, I hope I'm wrong with that as mine i can set at x and y but laser doesn't show the slope angle.
@CPS may know better i can sensor this
I use a app called SLOPE to calculate slopes in deg. dead handy just put in length and hight and it gives you the gradient in deg. to set iDig to. (y)

It can be used without a laser, either by referencing of a datum, for instance a existing kerb line if you wanted to grade a set level bellow the kerb, just one tap on the screen with the bucket on the kerb each time you move, or same procedure from a finished grade each time you move, not as accurate as using the laser as you get accumulative errors.

SLOPE is your friend when calculating gradients for sure👌
The only app you need is a calculator 😂

I’ve no idea, sure I’ve seen them used without?

If using a laser and the fall is on the laser, say a long drain run, one end of the laser is going to be in the air or on the ground… so how does that work?
Or if laser is level & fall programmed into idig how does idig know how far you are down the trench? Or do you always have to place the bucket on the last dug part and set it each time even with laser, but then what’s the laser doing….? Probably questions I should of asked on the idig stand at Lamma, I just wasn’t in the mood for talking that day!

This leg falls away from me towards digger in photo, it also falls to the right with a 2% fall and isn’t to a straight plane as had to follow hedge bottoms has 3 corrections in line would it be possible to set this up in idig?

Or only in full 3d model possible?
So when you say 3 corrections do you mean that cross slope is split 3 times as such?
If so then no it wouldn't really work for what your trying to do.

Idig touch is a full 2D system with dual slope so if this lane was say 8% away from you and 2% cross slope then that would be no problem.

So with the Idig you can use it with or without the laser.

For instance you want to dig a foundation 500mm down from ground level, 0 the system on the ground you want to go down from, then dig down 500. Once you move back, zero it on the dug ground and it will keep this level right along.

Or using it with a laser, your laser is just a fixed reference point. Same job, you want to dig down 500mm and your laser is 1.2m above the finished level, type in 1.7m and of you go.... the laser is just a fixed reference point and you only need to catch it every time you move the machine.
The reason for this is that the system doesn't know if the machine has risen or dropped when you have moved, so when you catch the laser is then recalculates the difference.

Of using the laser then the laser needs to be set for the fall. So say you have it set at 2.5% then you type the same into the Idig.

You can use it without a laser and still get pretty good accuracy on falls by zeroing it on the last bit you dug.... how ever, for precise work a laser is best.

The Idig also has a type measure built in which is great, and seriously accurate.

So on you lane that you were grading for instance,
You could touch the kerb on 2 points on the lengh of the lane and this will tell you the % of a the fall, then touch it on the opposite side and it will give you the cross slope %
Very very clever system

It has been known to catch me out by being smarter than i realise, probably pound for pound the best bit of kit I've invested in (y)
