Perished hoses ok?

I’ve used the Hydraulic Magastore from Grimsby for online hoses, come next day, seem very competitive.

While we are on the subject, has anyone found decent quality aftermarket hoses that actually last? I find most start perish with in a few years. But the original Gates hoses on some of my machines look as good as new 10+ years down the line! So what’s different? Do OEM’s insist on better quality? And the as the aftermarket is probably price driven, so the quality isn’t there?

Biggest issue with cracking is uv light hence manufacturers using sheathing over the top.

A thread gauge can be handy for some more of the not so common ones.
A lot can be identified by the shape/type of taper, and where the taper is, (female/male taper in female/male fitting), and a rule for the od/id of the threads.

I had quite a few made up when I was building the VA-r James .. all Gates rubber ... some are as good as ... a few are in a hell of a state .. badly cracked ... doesn't seem to be any consistency in their quality

This photo shows the feeds to the front drive motors. One with the bulge is an original Gates. The other with the scuff to the wire is an after market with a green stripe.

This photo shows the Gates as CM2T08=DN12 (1/2 inch)

And this photos shows that they are O ring jobbies

So going to get some ordered this weekend from one of the suppliers listed on this thread.
This will be a first for me. Is there anything special that I need to know please?

Get them off before ordering, ideally bung the holes as oil will leak out... If there are bends on both ends you need to get the orientation right (90 degrees to each other, opposite like an ‘S’ etc) so you aren’t trying to twist the hose when refitting.

Do you have a hydraulics place anywhere near you for a start. Its ok ordering online if you know exactly what you are after but if you order something that's wrong it'll be on you so you'll end up ordering again to get it right and paying twice. I am lucky in that local place i use is only 15 mins away east of me and one of the lads on their vans lives 15 mins west of me. He passes my place morning and night at least 5 days a week so it's not even worth me bothering unless I'm desperate and the vans are busy.

That'd be useful, but nearest is about 20m away. However, looks like I'll have to make friends with a local van driver

Yeah I'm very lucky because I've also known him for a lot of years, not really well but well enough. Normally don't pay a call out charge just hourly rate.

Might be just worth checking the hoses have been replaced like for like spec wise, maybe replaced 4 wire with 2, or 2 wire with one.

a very useful tip from my hyd guru in Raglan ...... the fittings will usually rotate in the crimps, if done carefully, to get orientation just right when freshly made
did it the other night on a hose on that Auramo clamp set up, to tweak the orientation on a hose end

I know some of us are advocating these online stores, but you need to be confident that your ordering correctly, as it can be a minefield, especially when you get into metric! It might be worth your while in this instance, to get a couple made locally, at least then you will know for next time exactly what they are? I’m not sure who you’ve got locally to you? We’ve got Wickham Engineering over our way, but a bit of a trek for you unless heading this way. Or theres Anglia Hose & Hydraulics in Copford, bit closer to you, but the other side of colchester.

Older bomag 120 had some rare threads on some fittings that even when you told ur local guys (not who i use now) and they had the hose in front of them they still got it wrong

Great advice - I'll pull one off and take with me next week when out with the digger only
Yep Anglia Hose is on the site in Copford where my dear old dad started as a farm worker
And it's near my brothers place in Stanway and I'm that we have to do some work (at a social distance) together next week
Maybe a Terex expert will pop up soon......
