totally immobile without power to run steering axles, suspension, etc. ... un-tow-able other than in a straight line .... must be summat seriously major to be there three days

It’s definitely a bad day when your 97-axle-billion-tonne mobile crane breaks down on the M56 and causes a 3 day (thus far) lane closure and associated carnage on that motorway along with the M6! What an absolute nightmare that must be for the owners…

Would need some wrecker to drag it away!

Flip. It's still there? 😳

Oh the joys . 56 is crap on a good day. Heading down the 6 tonight better be clear.

could also be summat as simple as an engine sensor not talking to the ECU and shut the motor down .... getting a diagnosis and then at it could well be a nightmare ... could be any one of a thousand simple issues ...... bloody electronics'll be the downfall of most plant as it ages :(:mad:

1 lane (of 3) remains closed on the #M56 westbound in #Cheshire between J9 (#M6) & J10 (#Stretton) due to a broken down 120 tonne mobile crane. We're now working with the Police to safely escort the vehicle off the motorway and we will hopefully have all lanes open soon.

well they've gotten the boom up to access the chassis' motor BTLs and looks to be at least one tow truck in front of it ..... as said, without chassis power it'd be damned nigh on impossible to tow in anything but a straight line so might have gotten it 'breathing' to a degree?

Be interesting to see. Said the manufacturers were on site so something must have gone Pete tong
Looks like FAM towing so keep an eye on their sm.
Russel had an engine sensor go down on his Scania based Liebherr last year .. screwed the ECU ... but took a LOT of finding - by Scania ... nigh on £10k for an ECU and another two for a new key - each !! ... possibly a big V Merc in that and probably very tightly shoe horned in. As also said ... electronics'll become an increasing nightmare on plant as the gear ages

What man as done, man can do, what never has, maybe
That’s at the junction I get on an off the M 56 I’m only 15 minutes from there
you would think they would put something in place from the factory that would make it easier to tow with a engine failure

how’s that hydraulic power pack coming along @V8Druid may have a job for it near me😂😂

They have electro-hydraulic power packs fitted to some rail-spec chippers to allow them to be tracked out of the way if the engine fails, and I know sea-defence contractors often plumb big machines to allow them to be moved away from a rising tide via an umbilical hydraulic supply if they lose power.
Shouldn’t be too much of a stretch to have something similar to allow such a potential monster roadblock as that crane to be moved if necessary.

gonna need some pack to run that .. multi axle hydraulic steering, braking, suspension .... not sure if they're air or HP hyd. braking too ..... that is one seriously complex beast to 'manhandle' out the way
