Assumed anything over 3.5t is classed as 7.5t hence being able to do a 7.5t driving test in a 4t van

this only applies to youngsters us old hits have it grandfathered. Look on the back of your photo card . And check the expiry on the card as well !!

I don't think that is correct, it's based on vehicle weight so once you cross 3.5t mam it's c1

I missed out by couple of years or so. Problem is you'd still need the e entitlement to tow a machine as doubt would be many combos where mam of van and trailer would be below 8.25t

Just after buying three Mercedes Sprinters 3.5T, h2 l2 size with tow bars and tachos. Got a good deal on them been pre registered vans 8 months old with delivery mileage and 2 free services. 25k each plus vat.

Just to further muddy the water I gave c1 snd c1e and have only ever done car test.

They are not needed though for a daily 7.2 as long as your train weight is not more than 7 tons so you could technically be pulled if you had say 2 tons on the daily and a max weight trailer as well.

No set of grandfather rights allows C1+E, you will have a extra number restricting you to a 750kg trailer behind the lorry

But 8,250kg MAM .... so if towing with a 7.5t you can ONLY tow a max of 750 kgs .... or 1050kg behind a 7.2t for the 8,250 MAM qualifier

The EU category C is for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes; however, the old HGV licences related to goods vehicles exclusively over 7.5 tonnes — with the old Group A (car) licence covering vehicles up to that weight — so a new subcategory C1 was introduced to cover the gap.

Drivers who held an ordinary group A car licence before June 1990 had it converted to category B and were also given entitlement to category B+E, enabling them to drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes with a trailer in excess of 750kg gross weight, and also subcategory C1 (vehicles up to 7.5t) and C1+E, which were previously included within group A.

In the case of the C1+E entitlement, a restriction code 107 was applied, limiting the combined weight of vehicle and trailer to 8250kg gross.

Would'nt be much point towing. Most 7.2/7.5 tonners are between 3 and 4 tons empty. You'd be better off with a pickup and trailer, on the old license there is no advantage to drawing a trailer behind a 7.5 ton class.

Other thing to remember with any Van is they are susceptible to loosing grip in a spectacular fashion on hills. Both myself and Stephen Trott (Strott on old forum - Earthmoving Services Swindon) had this with our Iveco's.

You need to remember it's MAM that matters and not what's actually loaded so a 7.2t van will only be able to pull a trailer plated at 1.05t without straying into C1+e territory

passed my test in '75 .. so got a real old one ... and Rory is right Fred .. it's limited to 8250kg ... by the E(107) ... but
also have a full C which entitled me to tow the full 3.5t behind a 7.5t Iveco ... (actually it was plated to 12t - but a trailer to suit would've been pointless ) ...
plus anything else in C up to 32t ....
never bothered with the E, (should've, but never did) , to accompany the C as I only needed it for the cranes, when all their groupings changed and an HGV/LGV was required for truck mounted,s (but not self propelled,s ???? )
Never ran an artic and had employees with a class 1 if required ...

Just a little update on this, Ford are currently doing a scrappage scheme covering commercial vehicles, long story short I'm getting £6500 for my old knackered tranny against a new tranny. Looked about and got a deal on A replacement from a ford dealer. All I have to do is take the old one to the local scrapy and get a certificate of scrappage and Ching Ching . There are certain qualifications to get it which we meet like age and length of ownership . The scheme ends in few weeks so kinda lucky
