Great stuff as always. Thanks for posting the pictures.
Bet things are a bit grim now the snow has set in. We are off to Rosyth on Monday and not looking forward to it being soft Southerners.

Yes one of the cat 320e’s got a set of chains sprockets and carrier rollers. All original parts done 7k hours. Normally use MST for our undercarriages’s or genuine Cat, decided to give astrak a try time will tell how good the quality is.

Safety repairs in this CAT 345D

new Nordic lights all round, screen mesh welded on for breaker.

still to fit bee steps and replace the auto greaser back to standard nipples
Tidy looking 345D is it the LKY serial number run? We got one been one hell of a reliable machine far better than the 349e. Them Nordic lights won’t have been cheap 😧. We put the square mess on the front of our Fops screens as well but cable tie it on, welding on them voids the certification from the manufacturer for insurance purposes.

good for 3.15t if it is grade 8/80 which looking at the hook I should think it is. quite common to see really normally if they keep the bucket on and over curl it snaps the chain or trying to pull trench boxes with out freeing them up first. had a chain a couple of weeks ago they had managed to stretch a 13mm hook and also caught them using a set of 4 legers to drag a full loaded 20ft container along the tarmacked site road with a 360'

SWL ...... proof load is IIRC, 5 times that though Andy and that's not to destruction usually ............

The factor of safety / Safety factor

The factor of the safety (Safety Factor) of fiber ropes varies from 6 to 12 mm depending on conditions of use. fiber rope less than 12 mm dia should not be used for a sling or apart of a lifting appliance. Their factor of safety (FS) varies with diameter. The factor of Safety for the hook, wire rope sling, chain, fiber rope, and belt are given in the table below:

No.Lifting ItemFactor of Safety
1.Mild Steel Hook5
2.High Tensile Steel Hook5
3.Wire Rope Sling6
4.Endless Wire Rope Sling8
5.C Hook5
6.Shank Hook (General Purpose)5
7.C Hook with Eye (0-25 Ton)4
8.Point Hook with Shank (63-160 Ton)5

Proof Test

Proof testing is the application of a load greater than the SWL (Safe Working Load) to detect defective workmanship, faulty weld or other inherent weaknesses. It is not a means to assess the SWL which should only be done by calculations and checked where necessary by suitable tests on samples.

Load testing of lifting sling, Proof testing of lifting equipment
Proof testing
The proof test is required as a part of ‘thorough examination’ u/r 60(1) of GFR and no lifting machine or tackle should be used for the first time without this proof test.

In general, the proof load applied to chains, rings, hooks, shackles, and similar gear is twice the SWL. It should be just under the yield stress for the material.

The standard proof load for mild steel or wrought iron short link chain is as under:

GradeTest load in Tons
3012 (d)2
4016 (d)2
6024 (d)2
8032 (d)2
Where ‘d’ is the diameter of the material from which the chain is made.

All items used in lifting machinery should be subjected to proof test loads

Yea it’s an LKY prefix. Good machine she’s had over 100K spent on her in the last 18 months. Full engine and pump rebuild full undercarriage etc all gen cat.

this is how it came out from cat but only the outside were welded. We re-welded but also did the middles also and addies tying wire for extra security.

That’s some dollar been spent right there, what’s the hours on it? Mines is 11k and only ever had a new fan pump and dipper cylinder.
