Thanks everyone for their advice now i know the filter is missing
how do I determine if the pump is the trouble or the forward or reverse valve how do I test them

It’s what I do!
There should be a tube under the red lid which the filter would fit into, is the cap cracked? Has it got an o ring seal?

Example I recently cleaned the water contamination from a 2t thwaites hydrostatic dumper, there wasn’t a filter available for a few days, so left out the t steering and tipping worked fine, but it wouldn’t prime the hydrostatic pump so wouldn’t drive! Filter fitted, drove normally.

Hi mick I know what you're saying but I keep going back to I was slowly moving backwards there was some sort of click and the engine stopped dead and the machine hasn't moved since yes I have changed the bottom hose since then but what can stop the engine like that

sudden hydraulic loading would stop the motor, particularly on tick over, but doubt it would sound like a "click"? pump drive is obviously still functional as all else is working from separate pumps on the end of the main.
@Mick-the-fitter is the drive pump a VD? if so it could be in neutral and not upstroking on demand .. control spring collapsed?

would guess someone lost/didn't have the right length bolts and packed them ..... piston pump for sure .. where are the feed and Pressure lines coming in/out can't see them from those pix ... assume the very top line on the 'block banjo' is case drain.
I'd guess the button under the lever is pump control @Mick-the-fitter ?? .... being optimistic, I'm hoping it's in neutral and not pressurising

How can I check I have a endoscope to have a look inside but don't know where to look and what to look for can you advise please

@Mick-the-fitter is the man for this .. he'll almost certainly have 'been in there' before
I'd be guessing that under that plate is the mechanical connection from your control lever for F/R, controlling the swash plate in the pump ... and judging by the 'packer nuts' someone's been in there before, possibly for a similar issue??

Sounds like the splined shaft that drives the swash plate for the hydrostatic pump has stopped driving the plate for some reason!

don't 'spose it's on a roll pin Mick? 'praps accessed under that plate with the long SHCS with the packer nuts ...
's obviously been off before
first thing it wants is a bloody good wash off, drain the tank down and either whip that plate off ... or pull the pumps onto the bench, for a better view :(

The plate with the packer nuts, looks like its over the forward/reverse valve, looks like the fwd/rev lever coming off the top of it
Still might be whipping the the off and having a look inside, no filter, tish build up in there:unsure:

Does it start?
Yes it very easy start don't smoke all the hydraulic work but don't drive we have jacked all 4 wheels up nothing at all
So what you are suggesting is to drain the oil and remove the plate with the built up nuts first
