Is the backhoe loader a thing of the past?

So rates have gone down in the last 10 years… 🤨 I was always 8hrs Plus travel time& half.. on white diesel travel time would now be double time as they drink the juice!
I did loads of day hire with my 3cx & minis but was going toward the contracting/price route more and more.. trail holes were the best bit! First person to set up ‘trail holes digging uk’ is onto a winner!!
I always did a 10hr minimum. They could let me travel in that time or pay extra if not. Worked well as most just went with the flat rate and understood youd loose 2 to 3 hours out of it on travel. Rare to do a full shift tho. Usually signed up and long gone.

It's a no brainer to hire in now with a driver. They are all decent drivers too, can't fault any of them so far.

Well as luck would have it , after drawing a blank for self drive hire, I suddenly remembered one of my customers used to run a BHL. He still has it (Case 580 - 2007) and is happy to hire at weekends for £90 a day. Only 5 miles away so not too much roading either, and all on red.
On sticks though so some learning to do :)

Also.... I learnt today that some models of Case BHL (SLE and SK) on sticks can have hoses swapped over to ISO pattern. Which I didn't know!

I considered swapping JakieB's hoses round when I bought the 'Drema ... was doing my swede, swapping between X and ISO .... but got used to it eventually .. after 10 years plus in JakieB, I had 'forgotten' ISO completely :(

would that be the slew and bucket circuits i would have thought bucket would have more flow and maybe even pressure it was a long time ago when i last used a case 180 and the slew was quite fierce on that and it had the thinnest hoses on the circuit that i can remember also i dont know if there are any relief valves in the spool valves i found it easy to go from jcb x pattern to the 360 type patterns but did struggle to go from a jcb 3c to the case 580 but i came ok eventually but never felt right, i been told by quite a few people if you learn on jcb x pattern the rest come easy, i found that right for iso but not for plus on a 180 just could not take to it quickly in my mind.

What determines why you can and cant do the same on ANY stick machine? Assume some complexities with hydraulics/flow rates etc preventing it?

Guess he means benefit of having his own?
That's it.

I don't mind giving the odd day away to others but when it's a good customer who has only used me because they trust me personally to achieve what they need, just makes me think of not having my own anymore.

In this instance I'll hire one on self drive and do it for them.

Ah I get you. I assumed you'd self hire it anyway rather than give it to someone else. How much is backhoe for a week out of interest?

£50 a day. That's what it is regardless of how long or short you have it for.
Is that 250 or 350 a week on a weeks hire. Crazy cheap that sounds, mind you 13t 480 a week I was quoted a few weeks ago

Every price you post makes me think you live in a parallel universe in some northern wasteland where it’s 1975 every day !

No offence and I enjoy your posts and what you get up to. But the prices you quote are mental!
That is exactly what it is.

I think same in reverse when I see/hear what other areas are doing/charging
