Hydraulic generators

Has anyone any experience with these? I’m toying with the idea of fitting one to my loader.
One type of job we do we run electric conveyors and take a generator with us, but it is petrol and the rest of my stuff is diesel and I’m always paranoid leaving it overnight in the back of the van in hotel car parks, so wondered if a built in one might be the answer.
Reading this back, I think you might be overthinking this, no disrespect. If they break in, they break in. Better they take a cheap genny than anything else. If petrol is the issue, then get a diesel genny. Plenty of cheap diesel 6kw gennys available. If anything goes wrong or it gets stolen, you can hire one locally anywhere no problem. You could even fit it in a frame to the back of your loader.

Going from diesel engine to hydraulic pump to hydraulic motor to alternator to electric motor is introducing huge inefficiencies.

I'd swap the electric motors for hydraulic motors personally, then run them all off one powerpack (assuming they are all near one another?)

See I wouldn't. There's a bigger cost to that, he can't run them with out a power pack if he is close to an electric source, There is more mess involved with hoses etc. I get exactly where he is coming from.

But he's said he'd be using it with the loader. So he should already have hydraulic service nearby.

A bit more background. When the conveyors are working the loader is stopped, just holding a bulk bag open for waste on the forks. When it is working, moving stuff about the conveyors are stopped.

But like i say, its the cost of replacing the motors. It wont be a straight forward bolt on and go, 3,4 or 5 motors plus maybe gearboxes and hoses etc..... soon ad up!

True, but less nickable than a petrol gennie.
Whats the likelyhood of it actually getting nicked? And how many times can you replace a petrol genny for the cost of all the faff being talked about here?

Damage to the van caused by breaking in will cost more than a petrol genny.

Once it's been nicked once, you're several magnitures more likely that a second and/or third breakin will occur within weeks. Some crims know that you'll replace the half knackered one they nicked off you with a shiny new one, and once they've nicked that one, they figure you may well replace it again!

In a different Travelodge each time?

Besides, the generator is a nice diversion from the more expensive gear.

All I'm saying is, fear of it getting nicked makes no sense. I'd be more worried about the loader personally.

Unfortunately I've had my truck broken into five times in Premier inn car parks. Even having them on good quality CCTV with facial images and car registration the police weren't interested and I guess the crimanals know this. Luckily never had the loader or digger nicked.

I’d say to leave the genny in the compound with the loader then and leave the truck unlocked.

Would be a real ball ache to do a motor swap on the belts graham is using as the motor is built in to the roller drum so would need to change the frame around to accept the external motor then add a new drive drum and then there is the fact it would throw the balance out as all the extra weight on one side. The large roller in this picture is where the motor is housed so swapping it out is a no no really

Doesn't leave a lot of options then. Hydraulic to electric will have a fair old power loss though. Very inefficient.

If he converted to hydraulic, I guess he could just run it off the loader though?
but has 4 conveyors to convert motors to hyd drives on and'll need a LOT of plumbing .... easier and doubt much difference in cost to stick with leccy drives and as much leccy spaghetti as needed run off one hyd powered leccy source, which could be mounted on the loader or just sat close by and plumbed in to the loader on rubber pipes  (y)

Or better still this second hand one to test the water!...... you would be taking a change though i guess

gonna need a case drain line with that one and doesn't state voltage ... cheap though ..... if it works

now that puts a whole different complexion on the job  leccy it is .... hyd or diesel is the only decision really

That looks a good idea to me, nice and compact. Petrol/ diesel generators are awkward back destroying bastard's to move about. A Honda gx 160 is heavy and awkward enough by its self. I would like something like that on my dumper but doubt I will have the space now it's got twice as much engine.
I bet it costs about 3 times as much as a normal genny though.
