flail mower

Hello all

Im thinking about putting a flail on my new machine when it arrives for a bit of grass and hedge cutting. I don't want to fork out for a new one so ill be looking for a cheap second hand one for now.
Can anyone tell me if its possible to take the mower off a hedge cutter and adapt it to fit a machine? will it work by just attaching the hydraulic pipes up?

yeh correct Ollie ..... Bomford 4 footer ... bought an entire arse end jobbie for a traccy ... was cheaper than trying to find just a decent head ... which this one was
run it off the breaker circuit which has an adjustable pressure and flow valve in circuit on mine - fortunately .... needs about 70l/m and IIRC 180 bar (would have to look back to check) ... set the valve up and ran sweet .... I'll find some pix

IMPORTANT to remember to incorporate the CLRV in the plumbing (cross line relief valve) or the flail comes to a blinding halt when the oil supply stops ... and can do damage other wise - like snap shafts/belts/etc.
the CLRV allows oil to continue to flow between the P and T ports of the motor, after the supply is closed, letting it 'run down' gently

Thank you for your reply. There is a bomford B457 in my town for sale at £600. The seals have gone on the hydraulic motor apparently, but might be worth doing?

I kept the lower arm on mine as one alternative mount set up .... for that extra bit of reach and plumbed the tilt ram into my rotate circuit for control

suitably modified

gave a serious range of angle of dangle

these were a suss session ... a few mods later and .....

I had a multi angle/tilt set up for straight on the miller ..

but'd also fit under the VA-r

That’s ideal. If possible I would like to run mine below the RotoTilt through its circuits.

Just bare in mine Alex you will only get just shy of 60LPM through the Rototilt extra circuit, If you are replacing the motor look for one that will work at this rate

So it would be better to run off the main breaker circuits then? Would I need a pump to run it, would it not run straight off the hydraulics from the machine?

just had a look at the model you talked about, its a fairly small flail on it. It will run off the machines Hydraulics no problem, It really depends how much flow it needs. If more than 55lpm it will struggle under the tiltly, it will run but will be slower and die down quicker. even if it does need more you can run the hoses past the tiltly and "T" them into the hammer lines, still get tilt and rotation, just not full 360

At that money and size.... id take a change to be fair

this is me breaker valve - minus the solenoid, at the time ... it's a flow sharing valve which bleeds off the required amount of oil & pressure at whatever you set it to and allows the rest to carry on to the main valve chest so's the machine's functions'll carry on

me 'short reach' version of the mount in the making, for straight under the Miller or VA-r

'course you could just bang a pick up straight onto the mount rail ... but I'm 'known' for me multiple options/cater for all eventualities approach and this still gives me five x four (20) fixed angle variants, by swapping the fixed links .....

and varying the quadrant angle ... plus I can also turn the quadrant around 180 deg.s and have 360 deg swivel options on how I hang it straight under the hitch ... as said multiple options

this was a 'special' for Alex, to go under his tilty

same head as mine, near as .. enabled him to get it vertical, side on

check out Whitehouse Products for a motor ... might be cheaper than a re-seal job ...... http://www.whitehouseproductsltd.com/motors.aspx tell them what the unit is and they'll probably be able to match it from the model .. got any pix?

... and ten miles from home .... had to buy the whole shibang,

took some juggling into me trailer with a front end loader .... and some tie-ing down ... like juggling worms .. everything wanted to move and squirm

but worth it for the head

and ended up with all sorts of handy bits though .... including the CLRV
plumbed Alex's with a non return/one way tee-ed between the lines to give the same effect .. as it only runs one way it worked a treat

Anyone had any experience with the flail’s from Robustrack LS3-800 ? Or any other suggestions? I guess there wouldn’t be enough flow to run directly through @Engcon UK aux line?
