the customer had the bucket ram in bits to reseal it.

theres not a lot of change out of 20k for the borer, then another 10k for my Lincoln diesel welder 2.5k for the wire feeder , god knows how many k in measuring tools, then a full van of fitters tools, and, and, and, and, the list goes on and on

It looks a good setup for re-boring bosses. Is the wire feeder built into the boring unit? I’ve done plenty rewelding of bosses with just a standard mig torch.

The borer supplies the rotation and the feed for welding, the wire feeder is not part of it. The welding lance has a Euro connector that plugs into your own feeder.

It’s so much easier than trying to hand weld

Really tidy work mate. Nothing like having the right tools for the job. What sort of money is a line weld/bore on a pin like that five tonner?

I started off with a home made borer and hand welding bores, but like you say, it gets to a point where you need the right gear for the job

Yeah I use it regularly, it’s got a smaller bar than my proper borer so it gets put into action on some of the smaller bores

steam engine / loco? of some sort I'd say ..... love the milling machine bolt on feed drive on the home made borer feed ... drive's a dropper / reduction box of some sort? .... lot of thought gone into that

your right graham, I'm boring the axle boxes on a Clayton and shuttle worth traction engine built in 1911.

the gearbox is a 2:1 reduction I think

how does the dedicated torch deal with feeding the torch with wire and the current supply, whilst it's rotating ???

theres a set of slip rings inside the torch lance for the power and a rotary coupling for the gas. the wire runs in a standard liner, thats where the knack comes into it, you have to have everything set perfectly to get a good weld, its a bit of a dark art and everyone has a different method with regards to wirefeed/rotational speeds/feed/power/ gas flow. bore welding can bring the strongest of men to tears somedays!!
