thought id start a post showing some of the repairs and projects that I get involved in.

a few weeks ago we re-machined a drive flange for a Komatsu 65 dozer that had been ran with its segments loose. no spares were available from the manufacturer and there was no idea of a lead time.

the bolt holes were knackered and so was the mating face of the flange and the OD. we filled up the holes and re drilled to the correct hole centers on the correct PCD. Then the face and the OD were built up and turned back down in the vertical borer.

I’m no expert but I would say the Webster and Bennet machine is a vertical lathe not a borer :geek:
Place I did my apprenticeship at had one and we made nozzles for diving bells in her and the like.

I’ve always know them as a vertical borer, but it doesn’t matter what we call them . It’s how we use them that counts. 😀

Here’s another little job, a worn out swing post/king post/headstock off a 2.7t hitachi. Line bored and bushed to take OEM pins. I started doing it onsite but it snowed and I got fed up of being cold so I took it back to the workshop.

Another swing post / king post line boring job last week off an old Kubota. The casting was bored and bushed back to the original size and I turned up a new pin.

Customer brought me a ruined hydraulic cylinder off a scrap handling petal grab. No replacement was availible from the manufacturer so I made him a new one. This one will be fitted and he will bring me the leaking one and rotate them all till none of them are leaking....... that will be the day

you try straightening that rod ??? had one snap like a carrot on me, in the press once ... barely gave it any and off it went :( .. BANG!!!:eek:
they'd usually straighten pretty well if they were only curved

That one snapped in service, it looks like it got bent and as it was extended an retracted it was trying to straighten itself out between the piston and the rod gland, the back of the bend was full of stress fractures

Mikes correct. It’s an Harrison m400

Looks a bigger mandrel than 2.5", with that cylinder in it  :unsure: .... well spotted Mike ;)

Only ever had one rod hard enough to snap on me (the one in the above post ).... usually much softer/more pliable

The cylinder in the chuck is 80mm od, it’s inside the chuck body but not down the spindle bore if that makes sense
