well that was clear as mud ..... have always said that fan heaters are one of the most efficient forms of leccy heating - and quick too
and what the hell are hydrogen fuel cell boilers?
CHP boilers are a type of engine that produce heat and power .. not sure if that’s what’s he’s referring to.

Long and short, hydrogen is only good if it’s produced with clean energy rather than using fossil fuels. It’s a great portable fuel though :)

" the multi-million-pound development of Uskmouth Sustainable Energy Park. ......... As part of its £19m civils and electrical package, Jones Bros is flattening the site and building up a platform to alleviate flood risk. ....... import more than 50,000 tonnes of aggregate"

battery farm discussed a while back at the old Uskmouth power station - no wonder it's gonna cost -

aside from leccy roller skate demand, data ctrs are gonna be draining the grid at an exponential rate it can't cope with, the way things're going

I was watching an older grand designs last night and the guy had an entire roof system that was solar capable of something like 4.6 megawatts a day but the grid limit the amount you can sell back in? So they’re were going to have to loose 1/4 of it etc Seems crazy to limit the sell back in if there is so much demand.

Was the engineer with the passive haus plus house one

Exported Energy
With negative running costs, the house exports more power than it uses, but with that comes a problem. Currently, in the UK, there’s a cap on the amount of electricity that can be sold back, and this house generates more power than this cap.

As Duncan explained, they should be able to generate enough electricity to power around four three-bedroom houses over a year; because of the cap, they are able to support around two and a half. This is down to how the grid works, and to avoid problems, there’s a limit to the amount of electricity that can be imported. To take advantage of houses like this, upgrades to the grid will have to be made.

I wonder if that could be evened out with a decent battery setup allowing export even when not generating?

but adding yet more (expensive) costs to the system ----- commercial solar generation's cap is waaaaaaaaay higher than domestic's piddly 4Kw

The problem with everyone exporting is like pumping water up hill - you have to increase the pressure to make it flow.
If the grid is at (say) 240V and you want to export, your output needs to be 241V.
then the guy next door wants to export, so the grid gets pushed up a bit more. Then you have 10,000 people exporting and the grid is at 250V.
Everyone want to join in and (particularly on long runs and/or low demand areas) the grid goes to 260V and appliances start running a bit hot.

This behaviour can be compensated for at the local substation, but it requires significant upgrades.

We have a 4kw system on the roof and recently upgraded to have a battery system installed. Even with 4kw we exported power when we didn’t have sufficient demand in the house. We are now putting that excess into charging the battery. The battery charges up overnight on cheap electricity. Pay back looks to be around 5 years on the first couple of months of operation.
I am not a green energy convert, just want to save some money!!!

assuming the batteries last that long :(:(
that's the killer on that sort of set up

A real concern……these have a 10 year warranty of the paperwork is to be believed!!
My biggest concern with all of these setups is the longevity of the installation firms - it is an industry overflowing with ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ outfits who set up businesses to cash-in on the latest grant-funded home improvements. Any warranty must be backed by the manufacturers themselves (assuming they are a proper business in their own right), with confirmation that the installation meets their warranty criteria.

I see this regularly with replacement gas boilers “for free”. This is one my customer had done, because I can’t compete with free! I ended up ripping it all back out and starting again, along with extra work to repair things they had damaged. Nobody wanted to know, as there was a chain of subcontractors who had all got their cut.
