Energy costs make you look at things

thats not how it works.

The main issue at the moment is electricity price per KWH is set by the wholesale gas price as gas is by far the biggest generator of electric. This is why we are now at 50p kwh capped when there has been zero increase in costs to the massive offshore wind farms.

Octopus energy do a 30min tariff whereby sometimes overnight where there is an excess of wind energy on the grid they pay you to take it. They are doing this out of their own pocket currently but there is strong mutterings of electric prices being de-linked from gas. They need to do this as the only way gas boilers will be binned is if they cost more to run than a heat pump to run.

I'm in the middle of renovating our next pad, an old 1920's building. I'll be making it near passiv standard (enerphit is the jargon for refurbs) by making it airtight and insulating the floors, walls and ceilings. It will require less than 3kw of heating for a 250m2 house. The costs are mainly labour and time.

In France/Belgium they dont have the mickey mouse EPC rating like we have, they rate the property in kwh/m2 of energy demand per year so you can immediately see which are s**t.

Heatpumps are a no brainer for hot water as you get double out compared to an immersion for the same money, they just need a non leaky well insulated house which unfortunately practically none (including new build) of our housing stock is.

Banks will sort it in the end as mortgages on low rated properties will be unavailable or very expensive. Market works in the end.

I think that's a very long way off though. We will basically have to flatten the country and start again. I suppose it's jobs for the boys. And if we where to do it it needs a bit of organization so that infrastructure can be sorted simultaneously.

Interesting the bit about Mortgage Fred, bank manager told me that RBS/NatWest starting to not give mortgages to anything low rated. Can't remember which band but must be more than E as that's already kicked in hasn't it for renting etc

2050 is what we and the rest of the west have signed up for. Not that far away. People will have to foot the bill in the end either by selling 40% below market value as that what the banks will value epc b and below or do it up.

Very good area to specialise in, most of the cost is labour and time. Stripping , insulation, cold bridging , air tightening etc

Last year the big developer funding banks started waiving the usual 1% in and out fee if you could hit 83 or above EPC rating which is not hard. Saved a couple of builders I know a 911 turbo and a villa in Cyprus ! Big doller.

Banks wil be the ones who drive all this in the end.

That has been given as a worst case scenario… which the media are reporting as “it’s going to happen”. Even quoting times it’s likely to happen! Scaremongering media again, don’t panic mr mannering.

However it does highlight the point that closing coal fired power plants and not replacing them is putting the grid under more strain…. Or is it these new electric cars everyone’s charging???
I’ve got a generator and I know how to use it. Actually it was my Dads from the last time this happened back in the 70’s. History repeats itself gentlemen - gotta stay sharp and ahead of the game

absolutely .... I can remember the cuts of the 70,s ... different cause then though.
they need to fire up all the coal fired stations they have semi mothballed for peak demand, back up and run the buggers as they were intended - full contributors to the grid, full time .......... and start hanging a few journos who're scaremongering the populous with all their utter sh1t ...... at the very least start muzzling them all .... they are effectively inciting unrest.
my genny'll get run up if needed, but have a smaller one that'll run the lights, 'puters, etc. and most importantly provide the CH boiler with the small amount it needs to function

I'll bet they have

Blathering on about how people should change their habits .... one easy solution'd be to make it compulsory for all leccy chariot charging to take place after midnight and before say 6 a.m. and no other times of 'peak' usage:unsure:
charge ONLY when there is lowest demand.
we've all said it ... where's the leccy going to come from to charge vehicles .. well now we know ... at the expense of everything else
the supply now has to contend with 570,000 leccy vehicles, it didn't have to charge, not that very long ago ... an increase of 92% since 2020 .. not accounting for the inclusion of plug in,s

How would you run a generator into a house fire board without back charging the grid, obviously requires some set up but wondering how.

Or just extension leads to fridge etc

If you are serious about it then you can get a special changeover switch which disconnects you from the incoming supply and then connects to the generator supply. So you can’t have the two connected at the same time.
We’ve not got a dedicated generator set up for it, but instead have a plug (machine inlet type) in a box on the outside just behind the switch. Just means running a lead from the genny to the house when needed. Not often needed, but handy to have…

Dedicated feed into main switchboard and isolate incoming main by tripping the switch provided the neutral is also isolated.
