Yes as without a Isolator one of the batteries will die and need premature replacement due to the laws of upside down Wikipedia knowledge.

Just going to the batteries on the machine if the machine is running it should keep up with demand

as for switches been thinking about it today

going to use a couple of 3 phase contactors (switches) and wire up as if I’m wiring up a motor for forward and reverse but on one contactor will be latched by a relay and the other momentarily so it reverses the polarity momentarily, using two buttons on the joy stick one will enigise the magnet the other will cut the power to the first contactor and also switch on the second one (only while the button is pressed) to release simples
