I haven't had a bad payer in 30 years ,with payments ranging from 20 quid to 200 grand
I had very little in my time, but there seems to be quite a lot of traders taking to FB and YT telling many tales of non-payers. Some get hit on time after time and you do wonder why, there will be various reasons.
Some will take on any job for anyone and some are a bit more cautious. It can be that they're desperate for work (greedy?) so take on risks. I always see a deal between two people (customer and contractor) as something which has to work well for both, a lot of punters don't realise this. They think they can treat you as they wish and you'll bend over and take it. Maybe as the more desperate do.
Recently I was asked to price up this that and the other and then he wanted my private number so he could ring me at his leisure. I'd already answered some questions with that what he was proposing wouldn't work, so let it lie a couple of days as I was busy. He responded with 'Given your lack or response I take it you're not interested, but i'll take this and that and can you give me prices on these?'
I couldn't really see a good business relationship forming with that kind of attitude so early on so told him to go shop elsewhere.
His response was erased before I read it, I don't need that kind of crap in my life. I know good and bad customers straight away and would always go that extra mile for the good ones.
There are a lot of homeowners moaning that they can't get builders to turn up and price up, sometimes to look at a job initially and then never again after the first meeting. Not one of them seems to think that the guy smelled something bad, but were too polite/busy/non-confrontational to say anything.
