When I did the tank in local bus depot guy I was dealing with it asked about the electric busses.
He had done the sums and over the life expectancy of both types the electric after I think 3 years was the financial choice even with the larger up front cost

For electric commercials, buses, bin trucks etc could be made to work, they travel a set route of know time and distance, and return to base at the end of each shift, providing there is enough power to recharge them.

my mate came up with the answer when we were having our sandwiches one day years ago ... vehicles could have a mechanism to couple and un-couple on the move, you could simply hitch a tow from the vehicle in front and save the planet

When I read it, I did wonder "who's gallons", but even with US (economy) gallons, it looks pretty tragic.
