I pass these nearly every day, i wonder how they stack up against a normal diesel tractor unit.

I did some chatgpting when stuck in traffic behind a fox 8 legged lectric...

This was the results just in fuel Vs electric costs:
AI doesn't lie!! 🤣:

Final bottom line (300 miles/day)
👉 Diesel:
Lower upfront
Lower total cost
Operationally simple
👉 Electric:
+£200k upfront
+£60k–£250k extra running cost over 5 years
✅ Straight answer
➡️ At 300 miles/day, electric 8-wheel tippers are not economically viable today.
They:
Don’t recover their upfront cost
Cost more to run
Reduce productivity

When I did the tank in local bus depot guy I was dealing with it asked about the electric busses.
He had done the sums and over the life expectancy of both types the electric after I think 3 years was the financial choice even with the larger up front cost

For electric commercials, buses, bin trucks etc could be made to work, they travel a set route of know time and distance, and return to base at the end of each shift, providing there is enough power to recharge them.

my mate came up with the answer when we were having our sandwiches one day years ago ... vehicles could have a mechanism to couple and un-couple on the move, you could simply hitch a tow from the vehicle in front and save the planet 💡simples

" Take Royal Enfield’s other offerings, for instance. The Super Meteor 650 is priced at ₹436,685 in India (US$4,685 in direct conversion). When the bike finally made its way to the USA, it was priced at $7,899. That’s a difference of more than $3,000. "
