Oops lol before coffee this morning looked like windows/system 32/cooling/system at a glance in your screen shot and knowing previously you took computer a part for issues and it's a Dell

sort of correct Dave .. it doesn't like re-startsIf I'm not mistaken this is not the first time this computer has failed. It sounds like it's stuffed/a lemon to me.
Maybe I'm just used to a reliable brand of computers
which the poxy W10 likes to do, following the constant barrage of updates ... when it's on it's a great machine and as long as I don't let it re-start it's fine for weeks... there doesn't appear to be anyway of stopping the updates, only pausing them for a max 28 days and then it demands to be re-started, or does it when not in action ... hence getting up to the blue screen yesterday as it'd snuck in a restart without telling me it was going to - I had it paused until the 20th May so not really sure WTF it even did it ... could well be a 
I DO hear what you're saying on the MAC front, but I have never even sat at one, so have no idea if I'd get on with it ... Only just gotten my head around W10 from XP and was getting confident in maneuvering/navigating my way around
I didn't grow up in the 'puter age ... and was very late arriving at the party eventually.

Druid, to use an Australian colloquialism, your computer's buggered. Definitely a lemon.
You would be surprised how easy it is to get used to a Mac. After all the Windows interface is just a poor copy of the Mac System, as Microsoft dodges around Apple copyright issues. The other positive about the Mac is that every model Mac runs exactly the same System. From the cheapest to the most expensive, the Operating System is identical. None of this Home version or Pro version, it's all Pro version. Also when Apple does System upgrades, the changes, although sometimes very significant, don't mean you have to learn the new OS all over again as in some Windows upgrades.
The consistency of the OS across all computers means support is much easier and problems very uncommon. Also I've found through personal experience and through the comments of grateful customers, Apple phone support is second to none. No underpaid person in the Philippines reading off a script sheet. The tech support are intelligent people who are good at what they do, which in my experience dealing with other company's tech support is incredibly rare.
I have many customers customers using Macs in their 70's and 80's with ease Druid, you wouldn't find it hard to learn. I'm sure you've got a few relatives/friends with Macs if you ask around. They're usually happy to help if you need it. You can just buy an inexpensive Mac mini https://www.apple.com/uk/mac-mini/ and plug it into your existing screen and use your existing mouse and keyboard. Just make sure you get sufficient storage up front for your needs now and into the future.
You can also give me a call if you need support or have any questions. Costs bugger all to call across the world via the Internet.

I use a few externals for bac up which is a religious exercise with me .. save to on board and both stand alones every time I save anything ... be nice to be able to automate that ... but would I trust it

zero chance on the little bank on the left Stu ... steeper than it looks, even with yer bum hung off the uphill wing and the seat cut out hot wired ..
have run it around the bigger area several times, when the carnage isn't too bad and dried a few days, but needs to be dry and again your bum needs to be out beyond the uphill wing, to maintain traction and keep the uphill wheel planted ... turning uphill is at/on the limit of its abilities TBH - pretty iffy .. especially with a full box on the back
yesterday's carnage was a country mile beyond the Countax's collector's abilities ----- way too wet to pick up and the ground was far too slick ... I was very careful on the Dane yesterday ... doesn't take much to get away from you - and in a hurry

Shame on you!You get what you pay for and you have a computer which in its innards has cheap years old tech which is built to a price not to a level of quality. My GP has done the same with an HP Windows laptop, no end of problems and deathly slow.
BTW the Mac mini box, even though it is the cheapest in the Apple Mac lineup, it is faster than 95% of Windows computers on the market. If you compare like with like it's relatively inexpensive.
By storage I mean on board Drive storage which is all solid state in any decent computer now. No moving parts to wear and 10 times faster than mechanical drives.
The automatic Time Machine backup on a Mac is simple, just plug in an external Drive and say yes to "Do you want to back up?" As long as the external drive is functioning it will back up all changes every hour the computer is running. You can easily recreate all your Mac data on another Mac from the backup. My customers have been using this system for the last 10 years with zero problems.

I don't have any qualifications! I'm self taught and curious. My customers are amazed at my troubleshooting ability, but really I'm just excellent at googling for the answers! That along with persistence and patience. I can't remember ever having an issue with a Mac that I haven't been able to sort out relatively easily. If you could learn something in the past you can learn it now. We're both a similar age I think Druid and you have time on your hands. You'd have no problems understanding the logic of a Mac.

We've had our annual rainfall in the last 3 months and that's well over 1.2 metres of rain
Hoping the rain stops soon as all earth work has come to a screaming halt this year

It's 4 wheel drive Druid. All the weight is on 4 widely spread driven wheels, virtually none on the deck castors. The weight is also low down giving a very low centre of gravity compared to the Dane. It would comfortably mow greasy wet grass on side slopes much steeper than your lawns on low pressure turf tyres.
We've Had over 1.2m of rain in the last 3 months and you sink into the ground with your boots. This mower glides across such wet ground with ease not even leaving wheel tracks
I've only got it stuck when I've bottomed the mower chassis in a bog hole and even then putting a few rocks behind a wheel enabled me just drive it back out. I've yet to find a slope it won't drive up. I run the roll bar folded down for better access under trees and because it never shows the slightest inclination to roll over.

Aussie mud will stick to the bottom of your boots, every step another layer until your walking about a foot off the ground
You try to get if off but it sticks like sh!t to a blanket
However if you get into a machine or car it will immediately fall off your boots and spread itself around the floor of the aforementioned vehicle
