Is your broadband still slow gra? That may not be helping some updates are sizeable...
Normally they do update pretty quick these days ..
Macs ain't infallible contrary to popular belief .

it's not so much the updates are the issue .... they seem to load fine .... it's the bloody re-starts that some require .... God knows what's in the updates ... as said last one/time it 'bombed' was faulty and Puter would not reboot .... goes into self repair mode .... eventually ... has tried today several times, but hasn't gotten past the first screen today ....

well .... still on steam ..... but ..... W10 is alive .... after pulling it to bits, following Alex's instructions, to try swapping a few things about, I appear to have it functional again .... last update seems to have been yet another corrupted piece of sh1t as it's removed it and a.n.other one downloaded at the same time ..... it's busy doing some back ups to 3 HDs ATM ... which I'd not done for a couple of days ..not like me, usually do it daily and there's stuff there i do NOT want to be worrying about AGAIN!!

well the W10 is behaving fine tonight ... better than it ever has TBH ... even got the second screen sussed, so can share it with me XP steamer ..... says he, firmly gripping a very large lump of wood

carrying on from Vicki's Fabia service yesterday ..... picked up filters for the Golf and the P38 whilst i was 'in the mood' (and town) ...

Golf first up this morning ....

air filter was a damned sight easier proposition than the Fabia was .. engine cover off and there's the oil filter .. POP and less mess than any spin on ... sump out first ... and re-filled, then swap the filter.

Having spent many years caring for V8s (and anyone else who has, will realise where I'm coming from), oil change sequencing is very important ........
if you don't wanna have to re-pack the bloody oil pump. Might not matter on many engines, but it sure as hell does on Rover V8s and Ford V6s, they do not self prime ...
so i tend to be religiously fanatical about never dropping both together.
Golf sorted ..

swap the P38 on the ramps, drop the sump and put 4 litres of Rimula back in (everything gets it)......
well up the stick .....
fill the new Mahle oil filter ready and spin the old one off .....
trying hard to avoid the inevitable cascade and catch as much as poss. ...
not easy with the track control arms and various other bits in the way and a nigh on 1 ltr filter .....
and get the new prefilled filter back on PDQ ...
too long risks a run back in the pump ...

5 minutes later and i am cursing this bloody thing sideways ...
will NOT start ....

vernier out and sodding hole is .2mm too small ....
have had this a couple of times before ...
spigot in the pump is bang on size and if there's any discrepancy in the filter's hole the bar stewards will not go on

drain old filter as much as poss. - refill with clean and spin it back on - first spin, no sweat .....
bloody manufacturer's machining tolerances .....

would expect better of Mahle

so that's 3 out of 5 sorted -- SIL's ain't due yet ... Josh and the 'tribe' are here next weekend, so dare say he'll be looking for one ... might give the 'Drema a treat too, but don't think Lil' Jake's due one ? Ollie @Gunners ???

this arrived well ahead of schedule/promised delivery date ...

... earlier this week ...

and had an hour sorting it's home ....

just got to get it all connected up and add a few more 'ways' for a couple of extras ..... 16 way and needed ten for the original loom, plus an earth ... should leave me enough for what i need.

priced this up in Hann components and Harting too .... came to well over the ton ... this un's ying tong and TBH it's as well made as Harting's are ..... for 28 quid well happy with it and what's more it all fits Harting's own (got one on the 'Drema dipper for the VA-r) .... couple of dust/rain/protective covers're gonna come to the same as the assembly, for when they'm apart

doing this means I'm not gonna have to worry about the weather's effects on me new control panel ... can keep it indoors when not being used. Enclosure's IP 68 ... contents ain't though

My car pain is Range Rover Sport related, turbo actuator is playing up, body off to replace!! It was almost time to get the P38 back out of the barn!! But with a list of other jobs that we are going to do whilst the body is off this is going to be the last time the body and chassis will be parted in my ownership!! I hope!!!

one of the reasons I have resisted acquiring one - much to Pam's annoyance .... the number of things that require a body off to do .... she doesn't have to work on the damned things .... good luck with it ...... 6 or TDV8? six I assume as the "turbo" is singular

Fortunately just the 6!! I think o would have really cried if it was 2 turbos!!!

The reality is the P38 is actually a very good car if you can cope with the little gremlins. The RRS is a better car, but also the gremlins where upgraded!!

got a blast off this morning .... after i'd done 'the boss's' Golf ..... was minging after all the sh1tty wet lanes the last couple of weeks, back and fore to Russ's place .... as I say, has kept well - 140k on the clock -- have put 90+ of 'em on it ... and still enjoy it.

It's only the sport that is body off, a proper ranger rover doesn't come a part as its monocoque.

that's a 'proper' one above Alex .... proper ones have a chassis ... if it doesn't it isn't ..... the classics and P38s sit on a chassis

I'm ment proper one as in range rover vouge of full fat as some call it. The sport is based on a discovery.

But yes proper 4x4s should be chassis

back on steam power after the W10 Dell s**t itself AGAIN for the 3rd time in 12 months, last night, updating - it ain't come back up yet ...
Alex (cyberprog) came over and sorted it first time for me, with a complete wipe and reload.
It managed to self repair itself the second time, after Alex'd 'breathed' on it the first time, but didn't think it would manage it ... took forever.
And now it's done it again - been watching, (on/off), a circle of dots, going round all ****ing day
thank f*** for me old faithful XP ... much slower, but at least it works - the W10 is great when it works ...
some nice features, but the constant updates that you can't turn off, and it's constant reporting home are utter crap
may be a step or two closer to a Mac

It's definitely time for a Mac Druid. I sold approx. $40,000 worth of Macs in the last month. Most were existing customers wanting the latest 16" M1 series MacBook Pro's. Most of these customers I hadn't seen in the last 7 or 8 years after selling them a Mac then. They had no trouble with their Macs over that period of time that they weren't able to easily sort themselves as average users, not tech heads.

One thing that Windows/PC/Intel computer owners might no have realised over the past 12 months. Apple has developed their own CPU and Graphics chip sets based on the chips they developed for the iPhone when it first came out. Back then when smart phones didn't exist, Apple sought chips to build the first iPhone and Intel was asked whether they could supply a high power CPU/Graphics chipset with extremely low power consumption. Intel passed on this believing smart phones were a fad, and anyway it controlled the computer chip market with "Intel inside" and that was where the money was.

Apple believed smart phones were the future and went about designing and building it's own chips which would be powerful but would consume very little battery power. They also made the chips integrate with their iPhone Operating System, which was very similar to the Mac OS. The way Intel chips were designed to support many Operating Systems meant they had lots of legacy crap which lowered performance and used more power. Apple had their chips fabricated by Taiwan Semi Conductor who outpaced Intel in building chip circuitry at a smaller nanometre scale than Intel could achieve. This meant billions of transistors on a very small die, which then enabled more cores for more power with even lower electricity consumption.

It was only a few years ago that Apple was finding that their latest iPhones and iPads had more computing power than their Intel based laptops. As you can see the logic was plain, get rid of Intel and put their own chips into Macs starting with laptops. About this time last year the first M series Macs came out with the Apple silicon chipsets and I've sold many of them since then with no problems and extremely happy customers. There have been no compatibility problems I've seen, and even the cheapest models had had more power than my customers know what to do with, and battery life of around 20 hours

This last month saw the release of the most powerful Mac laptops ever made and I had a queue of customers waiting for them. They were not disappointed No other laptops from any other manufacturer can match the speed and battery life of these machines. I doubt whether my customers will ever use a fraction of their true potential, but they will have a very fast machine for long into the future when an Intel based machine would start to struggle with a new OS version. And with such advanced chipsets there's very little heat generated, so very little thermal expansion and contraction which can rapidly shorten the life of a logicboard or graphics processor.

Most of the Mac range has the new chips apart from two high end desktop models which will have Apple silicon inside in the new year. Apple has had a multi year head start on the rest of the computer industry with these developments and an integration of hardware and operating systems across all its range of devices that no other manufacturer can match. Security is also unparalleled and has been incorporated into the hardware as well as the operating systems.
So Druid, as a keen purveyor of quality equipment, it's only logical you get a Mac so you can post more and fiddle with computers less
Just keep it under cover and not under a ratty tarp outside in the rain...
